Finding a work-life balance is something most professionals strive for, especially when long hours at full-time jobs are necessary just to stay afloat. But with the rising cost of living and economic instability in the U.S., many working-class families are feeling the strain more than ever. Reddit user u/Fabreezy28 recently took to the platform to voice his frustration with these challenges, bluntly stating that “America is anti-family.” His post resonated widely, sparking serious conversations online about the burdens facing American families.
In his post, he described how both he and his wife work full-time jobs out of necessity. "We barely see our kids (7 and 2) and have no energy to do anything after work or on off days cause we are exhausted," he shared, adding that every month feels like a cycle of working just to cover bills. "When the first of the month comes, the mortgage payment empties our account, and we have to do it all over again." As a result, there’s little room left in their budget for saving, let alone spending on family activities or relaxation. For families like his, the struggle to make ends meet has become all-consuming, leaving them feeling drained and financially stuck.
Their regular expenses keep rising as well. "I've always been a positive, open person, but the past two years have been breaking me down and I feel like I'm about to have a mental breakdown. I know there are others in worse positions than me and I don't want to sound ungrateful, but man, it's hard. Is anyone else going through something similar? Any advice?" the post concluded. It started a conversation between fellow Reddit users who came forward with their struggles of living in the country and how one can possibly cope with it.
u/Nokrai shared, "I work two jobs basically full time just so my wife can stay home. Child care costs so much it’s basically useless to have her working when I can do what I am doing and keep her home. On days I work both jobs, I get little sleep. We plan all appointments on Wednesdays or Fridays and I work one job on weekends too. Keep going things have got to get better eventually, right? I don’t really get to see my kids much but I’m glad my wife gets to." u/welkover noted, "America is more anti-single people than it is anti-family. But we should really just cut to the chase and say it's inhumane."
u/hercarmstrong suggested, "My best recommendation is hopping jobs for more money. It's literally the only thing that has allowed us to claw our way into the middle class." u/mibonitaconejito mentioned, "It is, but even more so, it is anti-poor. If they have it their way, there will be nothing but million/billionaires and the very poorest, no in-between. I fear America is done for. No humanity, no love, no kindness. Just greed, racism, fake Christianity and more greed. Yesterday was proof of it." u/LadyMorwenDaebrethil added, "Capitalism destroys the family. Conservatives complain that the family has been destroyed. Here is the real cause."
