The employee used $2,000 of company money for her grand goodbye. The result? A lesson in trust she’ll never forget.
Employer-employee relationships are built on expectations, mutual respect and trust. While it is not always possible to meet targets set by the company, sometimes, in the heat of the moment, exchanging jibes has become pretty much normal. However, there is no going back once there’s a lack of trust in one another. In a similar incident, a boss, u/FrostingRegular1328, was recently left with no choice but to fire her assistant after the latter threw an “unreal” farewell party. It turned out that the worker was publicly called out by her superior for organizing a party at their office, with the management completely blindsided by the “goodbye” surprise.
“So, I own a mid-sized tech consulting firm and recently hired a new assistant, Lily (26F), a few months ago. She seemed competent, though she had a quirky personality and sometimes blurred professional lines,” the 28-year-old boss started her post. The duo shared a good working relationship until one broke the trust of the other. Last week, the boss went out of town to attend a conference. Coincidentally, Lily took the occasion to announce her departure via an official email to the rest of the employees, inviting them for the final get-together.
Before she left “to pursue new horizons,” a massive farewell party worth $2,000 was called at the office. The boss later realized that “Lily used the company credit card to order catering, decorations, a custom cake, and even arranged for a bartender to set up a drink station in the break room.” The employer was shocked to learn about it upon her return. “Not only did I never receive a resignation from her, but she also hadn’t actually quit! When I confronted her, she said she was ‘testing’ how much people appreciated her,” the fuming boss wrote, explaining Lily’s “social experiment” wanting to see if anyone cared for her to stay. The boss went ahead with firing her assistant on the spot for what was reasoned as “misuse of company funds” and “deceptive behavior.”
Lily, who faced public embarrassment for her actions, went ballistic on social media, claiming she had a “soulless boss” with “no respect for mental health and personal exploration.” Additionally, the disgruntled employee expected her boss to appreciate her “creative way of bonding with the team.” This has affected the boss deeply, especially after some of her friends referred to the firing as an overreaction. “Maybe I should have just docked her pay or given her a warning instead; I’m torn because I do value my employees, but this felt like an absurd breach of trust,” she concluded.
Several people online are reacting to her post, mostly supporting her stance. “Report her to the police for fraud or theft. Pursue the amount she spent through legal action in court. Consult a lawyer to determine if you can respond on social media by disclosing that she stole $2,000 from your business,” said u/Cursd818. u/0ne4TheMoney added, “I acted as an extension and representative for my leader. I’ve also shut down other assistants who thought they could manipulate the system.” “The timing is suspect, and it shows a lack of respect for your leadership,” added u/TA23429429349. The boss commented, “I’d like to thank everyone who responded and shared their opinions. I have decided not to take legal action against Lily because the $2,000 isn’t worth the stress of keeping her in my life. I see the $2,000 as the cost of her exit from it.”
