The woman revealed that her boyfriend had a habit of pulling pranks, even after she repeatedly warned him to stop.
A prank is only funny when it doesn’t hurt anyone—but some don’t consider the impact of their actions. One woman, fed up with her boyfriend’s constant pranks, had enough when he pulled an “engagement prank” on her. Determined to make him understand the weight of his actions, she called him out on the spot in front of his family. Later, u/Secret-Assistance225 took to Reddit, wondering if she should have just walked away instead.
The 40-year-old explained that her 38-year-old boyfriend, Keith, had a habit of constantly pranking her. She had warned him that she wasn't a forgiving person and that he should stop several times before the incident. "I kept giving him chances because he has redeeming qualities (he's funny without pranks, acts like a good listener and generally showed me deference)." However, the man’s redeeming qualities began to fade, leaving the woman increasingly worried about their relationship. Tension had already been brewing, with two previous disagreements foreshadowing deeper issues. The first incident occurred when they ran into the woman’s ex. "Keith was enraged because I answered my ex's greeting," she explained, adding that he accused her of being too friendly and called it disrespectful.
He tried to make her jealous by talking about her best friend and didn't apologize for making her feel bad. "Second, he criticized my outfit and said that I looked ridiculous in it. I should have dumped him right there but chose to put it in the back of my mind because I already had a lot on my plate," she wrote. The woman had hoped that everything would go back to normal at some point, but the man's pranks started again. "Last week, we were at his mother's house for his birthday party. Everything felt pretty normal until everyone got really quiet," the woman recalled. She then saw her boyfriend down on one knee, describing it as the worst feeling ever. "First of all, we had not reached a stage leading to an engagement. Second, I thought it was likely a prank, but I didn't know how to react."
"If he was being honest, I didn't want to say no in front of his family, so I would have probably had to say yes and then say no in private. If it was a prank, then he would have humiliated me in front of over 20 people," the woman explained. So, she decided to test him. "He opened the box and he had a beer can tab in it. I told him off right there," she revealed. "I said that he took to one knee to give out junk just like he tried to suck up to people to try and get them to sign up for his tacky, insignificant LLC so that he could push his trash services that he hardly knows how to do." She even mentioned that he had lost two jobs and wouldn't have been able to afford a real ring because of that.
The person decided that she was done with the relationship and walked out of the place. "I had to walk with his cousins following me and trying to convince me that he didn't mean to hurt me and that it was dangerous to walk home alone," she shared. She found an Uber after 30 minutes of walking. The man's brother's girlfriend had a good relationship with the woman and decided to check on her. She told her, "While she has never gotten along with Keith, ousting him as a workforce failure in front of his family was too much and his family was thrown off." This made the woman wonder if she was wrong for saying all of those things about his work.
People took to the comments section of the thread to support the woman. u/Patient_Gazelle9400 wrote, "Why do you feel embarrassed? He wanted to embarrass you in front of his whole family…" u/Beth21286 commented, "He's obviously been lying to his family about his work issues, so hopefully, he'll be too busy cleaning that up to bother you anymore." u/ThrowRADel remarked, "His 'pranks' don't even sound funny. They're just mean and show that he has contempt for his partner." u/Active_Collar_8124 shared, "Pranks are funny when everyone laughs. This dude's 'pranks' are cruelty."
