Princess Diana was caught in a sticky love triangle between Richard Gere and Sylvester Stallone

When Stallone attended one of Elton John's iconic parties to woo Diana over, he was shocked to find Gere cozying up to her.

Princess Diana was caught in a sticky love triangle between Richard Gere and Sylvester Stallone

In his recently released memoir Me, famed musician Elton John revealed some intimate details about Princess Diana's love life. Allegedly, she was stuck in a messy love triangle between actors Sylvester Stallone and Richard Gere. To fully understand the context, let's kick it back to the year 1993, which is when John claims the two actors almost came to blows to win the Princess' love and affection at one of his legendary parties. So, it's the year 1993, Princess Di is freshly single after her infamous separation from husband Prince Charles (because he cheated on her). Gere has broken up supermodel girlfriend Cindy Crawford and Stallone suddenly finds himself head over heels for none other than Diana - who has her eyes set on Gere.

Reportedly, in an attempt to woo Princess Diana, the Rocky star strutted down to John's party. Once he caught her in deep conversation with Gere, he simply couldn't let it go. Throughout the party, Stallone was visibly frustrated. John writes in his memoir, "The most peculiar scene developed. Straightaway, Richard Gere and Diana seemed very taken with each other. They ended up sitting in front of the fireplace together, locked in rapt conversation. Judging by the kind of looks he kept shooting them, Diana and Richard Gere’s newly blossoming friendship was not going down well with Sylvester Stallone at all."

The 'Tiny Dancer' singer believes Stallone was irritated because the night had not gone as he had envisioned it. He explains, "I think he may have turned up to the party with the express intention of picking Diana up, only to find his plans for the evening ruined." By the time dinner was served, Stallone and Gere had locked horns and were ready to rally for their "damsel." As John's guests made their way to the dining room, the two actors were nowhere to be found. That's when John's then-partner and now-husband, David Furnish, discovered the pair in the middle of a heated argument in the corridor.

According to John, the two were apparently "about to settle their differences over Diana by having a fist-fight." Talk about some old-school drama! Furnish immediately decided to step in and attempt to break up the fight. He then politely asked the actors to join all the guests for dinner. As any fan of Princess Diana would expect, this testosterone-fueled approach to "winning her favor" didn't sit all that well with the Royal. Once dinner had ended, she was found cozying up to Gere by the fireplace, immersed deep in conversation once again. Stallone "stormed off home" not much later. John writes, "'I never would have come,’ he snapped, as David and I showed him the door, ‘If I’d known Prince f*cking Charming was gonna be here.  If I’d wanted her, I would’ve taken her!"

As the actor ripped away in his car, John couldn't hold back his laughter. "We managed to wait until his car was out of sight before we started laughing. Back in our living room, Diana and Richard Gere were still gazing raptly at each other," he explains in his memoir. "She seemed completely unruffled. Maybe she hadn't realized what was happening. Or maybe stuff like that happened all the time and she was used to it." The singer-songwriter suggests that it was the unavoidable Diana Effect. He affirms, "There was definitely another kind of Diana Effect: one that could bring Hollywood superstars to the verge of a punch-up over her, like a couple of love-struck teenage idiots." What a woman, folks. What a woman.
