Dress codes are meant to uphold decorum and professionalism in various settings, including schools. But increasingly, enforcement of these rules has sparked frustration among students and parents, with many arguing they go too far. Shasty Leah, known as @its_shastys on TikTok, recently voiced her anger after her daughter was sent home for allegedly violating her school’s dress code. Her video has struck a nerve, racking up 2.7 million views and 15,000 comments.
In the clip, Leah explains that her daughter was dismissed at 1 p.m.—with only an hour and a half left in the school day—because of her outfit. Frustrated, she details what her daughter was wearing: “My child is wearing a shirt much like I'm wearing, but hers is brown. Identical shirts. Hers doesn't have buttons, it's just a round neck, it goes all the way till her neck bone,” she says. She also points out that her daughter was in blue jeans, not leggings, making the decision even more baffling. Many commenters were just as outraged, calling out the school for what they saw as an unnecessary disruption to her education.
What frustrates the mom the most is that the school deemed her dress to be a "distraction" for the boys. Leah reflects on how such rules condition boys to believe that girls are "sexual play toys" if they dress in a certain way. She says, "But we're not teaching boys that you don't have a right to put your hands on any girl. You don't have a right to call her anything outside her God-given name." The woman then goes on to highlight the hypocrisy of the entire situation in the context of dress codes at most schools.
"If dress code violations are really a thing and we are really concerned about, cheerleading uniforms would not be as such. The volleyball uniforms would not just be practically underwear." Leah expresses how most teachers wear dresses that many would consider inappropriate for school but somehow such things are not taken into consideration by school authorities. The woman was quite angry at how things were with society.
She says, "It's 2024. We've got to do better as a society." Leah insisted that a girl's dress should have nothing to do with what boys think or feel. She also happens to be a mother to four boys and shares that she has taught all of them not to sexualize women. The woman concludes the video by saying, "Control your emotions, control your thoughts, control your impulses. Okay? Before someone fixes it permanently for you."
Many people on the platform also faced the same problem with dress codes at schools and shared their opinions about it in the comments section. @ravonna82 said, "When the school calls about dress code violations, I really want to know more about the adult who's been staring and having a problem with it." @sassylooksbycat shared a hilarious incident, saying, "My school tried banning leggings. Big mistake. BIG. All the boys showed up for three days wearing leggings in protest."
