An executive coach shares three surprisingly effective ways to get along with anyone at work, avoiding drama and building strong connections.
Getting along with anyone and everyone is difficult, as it requires a fair amount of people skills. Only a handful of people around us are charming enough to effortlessly impress whomever they approach. Yet, we might secretly want to be the center of attention in a room full of people; craving validation has become the new normal, especially with the advent of social media. To avoid any drama, executive coach Mel Savage, known as @leadershipmel on TikTok, has shared her three “magical” tips for connecting with people in the workplace, and the internet is buzzing about them.
“Being able to work with anyone, and I mean anyone, is an invaluable skill. People will pay for less drama and more results,” Mel said, emphasizing the importance of having cordial relationships in the workplace. Following this, the video showed the executive coach discussing the importance of learning these skills to be able to add value during formal discussions at the office. She began by highlighting the ability to accept and embrace one’s co-workers with all their flaws.
Additionally, Mel advocated the idea of not requiring any change from one’s colleagues, even in vulnerable situations. “Wishing someone was different only brings you disappointment. They're totally fine,” the executive coach told her 87.2K followers. Instead, she urged online viewers to accept their co-workers as they are to build leadership skills.
“Leaders know to work with what they have versus what they wish they had,” Mel said, concluding the first tip. The second way to get along with those around you, including friends and family, is to always be givers by “going first” for most things. “You like it when people are nice and patient and appreciative, so you go first,” the executive coach remarked. She further raised the point of never trying to control someone and instead being patient for them to realize their mistake(s).
“You can't control them, but you can decide to be nice and patient and appreciative yourself,” Mel added. The third and final tip, according to the executive coach, is to maintain a clean slate regarding one’s colleagues, forgetting any past experiences. “Clean up your thinking about the person. What you think about this person is a filter for how easy it’s going to be to get along with them,” she explained. A leader needs to make a clear and intentional choice when it comes to judging others, she said.
Thinking positively or negatively about co-workers is a choice that may eventually affect the overall outcome, the executive coach elaborated further. “What you think about them is a choice that you're making every day,” Mel said. The career expert concluded by advising leaders to focus on “what's working with the person versus what's not working.” The footage has been receiving thousands of views, with several viewers reacting to it.
Among them, @jeff.bazinet.law wrote, “Being able to collaborate with a broad range of people is a key ability in business.” Others, including @jent7869, praised Mel for guiding them on how to smoothly navigate the complex and disorienting structures within corporate life.
