Mamdani also noted that the law shall not expire until the Knicks, hopefully, bring back the Larry O'Brien Trophy home after 53 years

For nearly three decades, New York fans have been waiting for the NBA Finals magic to return to Madison Square Garden. On Wednesday, June 3, this wait is about to be over, as after a grueling playoff run, the New York Knicks are back in action against the San Antonio Spurs. The entire city is buzzing with excitement as they gear up to see their favorites suit up on the hardwood, except the young fans, who have a 9:00 p.m. bedtime during school days. However, Mayor Zohran Mamdani might have just solved this problem, according to a June 1 report by ABC7.
All of this kick-started with a group of students joining the Mayor of New York in his office on Monday morning, urging him to sign an executive order to increase their bedtime, as shown by DRM News. Obviously, with this being such a historic moment in sports for the city, Mamdani inked the order without thinking much about it. "Bedtime is repealed! All of you can watch the Finals," he said, as the children also put their handprints on the order, making it official. Shortly after, the mayor also took to various social media platforms to announce this order repealing bedtime.
On X, Mamdani added that even though, as a mayor, every day he's forced to make some really difficult decisions, this wasn't one of them. Well, this isn't really a surprise given that Mamdani is a sports enthusiast as well as a die-hard Knicks fan. In fact, he even attended the team's Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. This also explains why he asked these young fans, "Who here was alive in 1999?" Before signing the order. Nonetheless, the order is now in effect as we speak.
Today, I signed an Executive Order temporarily repealing bedtimes in the City of New York so that kids of all ages can watch our team in the NBA Finals.

As Mayor, you’re forced to make many difficult decisions. This was not one of them.
Go Knicks. pic.twitter.com/DqjNtVh17h
More importantly, Mamdani also noted that it shall not expire until the Knicks, hopefully, bring back the Larry O'Brien Trophy home after 53 years. Regardless, it's small, wholesome gestures like these that have helped Mamdani get the approval of the people of New York in his first 100 days or so at the office. According to the Marist Poll, nearly half the city, or 48% to be specific, approve of Mamdani and his work thus far. Meanwhile, about 23% of people remain unsure about his performance. Only about 21% of people don't think that he's doing a great job.
As a dad, this is the kind of leadership that actually sticks with kids forever. You didn’t just sign an order.. you gave NYC families a shared memory during the Finals. In a city that never sleeps, bedtime repeal is peak common sense.

Either way, his latest gesture will surely increase his popularity amongst the youngsters, even more so, with people being thrilled with his announcement. Under his post on X, @lerenyaew wrote, "I live in Texas, and everything this dude does is cool as hell. Can you be our Mayor too?" At the same time, @TonyEbido had another request from the mayor, "This was not one of them." This is elite mayor behavior. If the Knicks bring the championship home to NYC after this, you might have to make it a permanent holiday. Go Knicks!"
