Host Joshua Rubin shares his own battle with addiction to help reunite parents with their daughter

Trigger Warning: This article contains themes of substance abuse that some readers may find distressing.
For four agonizing months, a desperate father and mother duo searched the streets of Cape Town, South Africa, for their missing daughter, Lauren, a young woman who was left physically and cognitively compromised after suffering multiple strokes. However, a breakthrough came when they saw her in a random YouTube video from Joshua Rubin, who runs the Wide Awake Podcast channel. They decided to drop Rubin a text, as a long shot, but to their surprise, he responded. In fact, the text prompted him to join the family in the search for their missing daughter, which he documented in a YouTube video on April 14, 2026. The video has gained over 768,000 views so far.
After meeting up with Lauren's parents, Rubin sat them in his car and started a harrowing search through the city's most volatile areas. From the Taxi Rank and Parade Area, Rubin and Lauren's parents met up with several locals, including a few shady characters, hoping to get a lead on their daughter. They also informed Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) and asked them to send a message if they see her. Although a few recognized her, they couldn't tell her exact location. Hours passed, and they still had nothing solid, so they decided to drive to Bo-Kaap, one of the oldest multi-cultural neighborhoods.

There, Rubin showed a few locals pictures of Lauren, asking them if they knew the girl. Even though he didn't get any answers at first, soon several people suggested that he check Long Street at night. So, they headed to the next location, with the day about to end, everyone inside the car started losing hope. The parents thought they'd never find their daughter again. It was then that Rubin suggested that they drive by the place where Lauren appeared in his video the last time.
This was a last-ditch effort, as after this, they would have to return home. While they weren't too confident, at that very moment, they spotted Lauren, standing near the train station. However, she was accompanied by a man. Initially, when the parents tried to approach her, the situation grew tense and emotional. Even more so because the man beside her was holding syringes containing drugs. Nonetheless, Lauren then proceeded to enter the car, where she first denied being held against her will.

However, soon, her parents confronted her regarding her addiction and her general state. Rubin, who has his own background as a recovering addict, then intervened, trying to make Lauren understand that there's a life beyond this. After a few minutes of deep conversation, Lauren agreed to head home with her parents. In the meantime, Rubin arranged for her rehab. But, unfortunately, Rubin concluded the video with a somber update revealing that while on her way to the rehab centre, Lauren went missing again, urging his viewers to help find her again.
While Lauren's case is quite saddening, this isn't uncommon, especially among homeless people. According to South Africa Care Rehab, nearly 70% of homeless people indulge in substance abuse. So, it's not really surprising to see Lauren in such a state after leaving her home. Nonetheless, what's actually surprising is that rehabs don't work as they should. This comes as a result of short-term therapies only having about a 30% success rate, according to Crossroads Recovery Center.

That's why people in the comments section of the video were more than impressed by Rubin's amazing pep talk to Lauren. @barryhayman wrote, "That speech in the car was probably the most heartfelt, deep, and honest message I've ever heard somebody give to another person." Meanwhile, @-taylord2am-473 commented, "This video randomly came up on my YouTube today, and I think it was for a reason. Think imma try and get sober and clean again."
