It took four years for the woman to realize that her husband had lied to her about 'a million things'

Sometimes, one lie is only the beginning. Now 36, a woman (u/ThrowRA64111862) uncovered a web of lies fabricated by her husband because he needed to “feel better” about himself. Ever since they got together, he told her that he suffered from a deadly allergy. He insisted that she keep an EpiPen with her all the time, which she did. But the thread was pulled during a dinner organized by her sister-in-law. A slight confusion in the Tupperware boxes’ colors fortuitously ended up exposing his first lie, according to the original October 10, 2022 Reddit post. As time went by, this one lie turned into two and two into several others. Everything he had told her was a lie, as she explained in an update on July 27, 2026.
My husband lied about being deathly allergic to a certain food

For years, she carefully planned meals around what she believed was his life-threatening allergy. Even their family members had learned to be hypervigilant about what they served him during meals. But during a family dinner, a simple mix-up with two leftover containers changed everything.
Her sister-in-law had specially prepared two Tupperware boxes, one for her husband and one for her nephew, who also suffered from an allergy. Her husband picked up the incorrect box and ate the leftovers. Given what everyone believed about his allergy, he should have suffered from a deadly reaction. But to everyone’s astonishment, “he ate the wrong dish of leftovers and nothing happened,” as the woman described. Later, he confessed that he had lied to everyone about his allergy because he didn’t want to be seen as a picky eater. “My sister-in-law thought she did kill him. I can't believe he's been lying since the day I met him,” she added.

On July 26, 2026, the woman posted an update sharing that there were a “million other things” that he had lied about. He told her that he lost his sports scholarship due to an athletic injury when he had received none. He told her that he spent a summer working in Antarctica when he hadn’t even visited the place. Although there were certain things he didn’t lie about, like his mom dying of cancer and his dad being absent, the lies he told left the woman floundering and furious.
Given that both she and her husband come from divorced parents, she doesn’t want to burden her own child with the same fate. “My family and friends say I should leave, but I'm trying to work on my marriage for my son's sake,” she said.

Her husband’s behaviour makes him a “pathological liar,” as some Reddit readers also pointed out. Although only a small population displays this behaviour, it causes much distress and confusion to both the doer and the recipient. According to a report published in Psychiatric Research & Clinical Practice, 13% of the surveyed 623 individuals self-identified as pathological liars. As Medical News Today explains, it starts small. But it "can gradually become more elaborate and dramatic, particularly if they are necessary to cover up for an earlier lie. They often become complicated by unnecessary amounts of detail." Over time, it causes distress and conflict in interpersonal relationships, and most of the time, it requires the intervention of a doctor or therapist.

Many Redditors had quite strong opinions and responses for the woman. u/TacoinWaiting commented, “Why do you want a marriage with someone you can't trust? Why would you want to raise a child who won't be able to trust his father? Honestly, serious questions.” u/sf3p0x1 said, “He's a pathological liar, and the smart thing to do for your kids would be to leave.” u/Jasnah_ remarked, “He’s a real life version of that liar character in The Rookie!”
