With Christmas approaching, people must have already booked their tickets to spend the festive season with their family and friends. However, for many, especially those working miles away from home, celebrating the holiday season with family is a distant dream. Sophie, an athlete on the Asbury Women’s Basketball team (@asburywbb), had no plans of meeting family for Christmas until her teammates pulled the biggest surprise. So far, the video, posted on December 2, has surpassed 3 million views on Instagram.

A viral trend has taken over social media. We're talking about the one where people guess their family, friends, and colleagues only by their voice. The basketball team convinced Sophie, their teammate, to join the same trend, keeping her oblivious to the surprise. She was asked to sit on a couch with her back facing her teammates. One after the other, players took the center stage and called out her name. Surprisingly, Sophie guessed it right the first two times, but the third one shook her confidence a bit. Behind her back, her teammates had called her mom, who had flown 3000 miles to surprise her daughter for Christmas. "Hey Choochis," she spoke, and Sophie just froze in shock. "What the F***?' she whispered, second-guessing herself. She asked the person behind to repeat, and when she did, the athlete realized that she was right; it was indeed her mom. "Stop," Sophie screamed, unable to believe what she heard. She immediately turned around and ran to take her mommy in a hug. "A year later and still our favorite memory!" the basketball team wrote in the caption.

Athletes live a difficult life. They not only travel frequently but also spend months away from their loved ones, leading to excessive mental burnout. Elana Meyers Taylor, an American Olympic bobsledder, has even spoken about the mental exhaustion in an interview with SELF. "Yes, you’re performing, and you’re winning medals. But they put the medal around your neck, and it feels rather hollow because you’ve got nobody to share those moments with, because you’ve invested so much in this. It takes over your entire life," she said.

Meanwhile, people loved how the basketball team surprised their teammate, using the viral trend. For instance, @raaa_001 commented, "This is what the internet should be intended to be about. I am glad that my algorithm brought me here." @_babystace commented, "Omg, it was so precious! What a creative way to use this trend." @chi_mas81 confessed, "This made me miss my momma something awful... What I wouldn't give to hear her voice call my name one last time!"

Similarly, @ccladyx7_gable wrote, "Blessings to all of her teammates for preparing her for this precious moment. I love the look on her face when she recognized her mom’s voice. I just lost my mom on November 2. I still have voicemail from her last few calls. I would do anything to hear her voice again. If you still have your mom, call her. Take a couple of moments to say hello and tell her that you love her. Thank you for sharing this video. Yes, it made me cry, but it also filled my heart with such happiness and beautiful memories."
