Sometimes, a loyal friend is better than a long-time lover. A woman (u/ScarletSpell) was saved in the nick of time. She ended her 14-year relationship after a mutual friend revealed that her partner had tried to cheat with them. The friend rejected the advance and immediately told her what had happened. Blindsided and distraught, she decided the attempt alone was enough to leave. Her October 14, 2026, Reddit post has since tallied 5,400 upvotes.

Good riddance.

Although it was just an attempt at cheating that didn’t become successful, the attempt signified that her partner of 14 years was willing to break their relationship. She even apologized to her, saying it was a mistake and a lapse in judgment, but it was too late. “I had forgiven her for so many small things in our relationship, but this is something I don't tolerate,” the woman confessed. The author said she felt done with the relationship, despite her former partner’s attempts to win her back. “The way she talks or does things to try and win me back just feels so fake and scripted,” she said.

The other day, she came across a Reddit post that seemed to affirm her decision. "What advice would you give a woman in your situation?" the post said. She was sure that she would tell the user to drop their betraying partner like a bad habit and enjoy their freedom. So, that’s what she repeated to herself. “You decide your own worth, and I've decided I am worth more than this ‘love,’” she proclaimed.

Lost trust

Trust and honest communication matter beyond whether an attempted affair becomes physical. A 2025 YouGov survey found that 94% of Americans rated trust as ‘very important’ to a successful romantic relationship, while 92% said the same about honesty. Research involving queer couples also highlights communication’s role. Published on March 10, 2026, in The Journal of Sex Research, a study of 112 couples linked better-quality conversations about sex with greater relationship satisfaction. For the Reddit author, her former partner’s attempts to reconcile now felt ‘fake and scripted.’

You deserve a partner who makes you feel safe

The internet sided with the woman and told her that an attempt at cheating is just as valid a hint as the cheating itself to get rid of her partner. u/rudderlessbarge commented, “Attempted cheating is cheating! I'm so glad you know you deserve better than this. Don't look back.” u/Electronic-Bicycle35 shared, “I’ve been with my wife for 15 years. I’d absolutely do the same. I honestly would rather that she would have the respect to come to me and have a conversation about having feelings or desire for someone else, rather than trying to cheat behind my back.”
