What was just a frivolous and fun attempt to write the 'song of the summer' became an insanely viral trend on TikTok.
In this glorious era of social media, no one can expect what would go viral on the internet. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple perspective reflecting reality to have millions of views online. Recently, Megan Boni—who goes by @girl_on_couch on TikTok—wrote a short song about what kind of man she was looking for, received love from millions and even underwent a funky remix. Boni's original song which she posted in January, has gained nearly 17 million views.
The 19-second video features the song with no background music or instruments involved. It was just Boni, who was adding some peppy tempo to her lyrics, saying, "I'm looking for a man in Finance... trust fund, 6'5, blue eyes." She wanted to turn her lyrics into an actual song, "just for funzies." However, little did she expect her song would become "the summer anthem" of the year.
The comment section was full of quips and satire for people "looking for a man in finance." Boni caught the attention of some of the top brands through her video. JBL Europe wanted to make this their new anthem. Ubank sarcastically pointed out, "I'm in finance." Crocs tweaked the lyrics a little to make it their own version, "Looking for a man outside, hiking, wears crocs, green eyes." OkCupid said, "Hit us with the remix, girlie."
Soon after Boni's video went viral, several music enthusiasts remixed the "Looking for a Man" song. Tima Pages—who goes by @rubythepookie on TikTok—the Berklee College of Music graduate, made one of the most viral remixes of Boni's song. While adding a groovy beat to the lyrics, Pages' remix garnered nearly 490K views. Also, the audio has become a TikTok favorite, with thousands of users making it the background music of their videos.
People were keen on remixing the song and created hilarious situations to match its verses. Dibs & Eliot—who goes by @dibsss3 on TikTok—a couple who share their relationship vlogs, shared a viral video where the woman tries to hide her man in the closet because "everyone is looking for a man in finance, trust fund, 6'5 and blue eyes." True to the women's fear, many women on TikTok were indeed making it the dating standard and crushing over guys who matched these criteria. However, this was not in the charts for the song's creator, who is currently surprised, not by the millions of views but by how "relatable" people find it.
The viral song has brought a massive shift in Boni's life. The 26-year-old in sales in New York City, told PEOPLE, "I'm about to hire a manager. I even quit my job! They were like, 'We get it! You do you." Boni explained that she is being sought out by many companies and DJs who wish to make music with her and release her first single. The TikTok star is totally cool with DJs remixing her song, though she may get credits for it. Speaking of how she came up with the song, she said, "It was just making fun of that, so I started thinking of the most outlandish, hardest things to find in a man and wrote it down, then I came up with that rhyme."
