Katie reconnected with her ex, Mike, after they ran into each other at a party

Many people assume they know everything about the person they've built a life with. But for one husband, an email from his wife's longtime frenemy revealed something that had happened during the earliest weeks of their relationship — forcing him to question whether the past changed everything they had built together. The man (u/throwra_wifeaffur) took to Reddit, sharing his dilemma and explaining his story in detail on September 25, 2019, which was later reposted by u/Direct-Caterpillar77 on July 27, 2026, garnering over 5,600 upvotes and 1,000 comments.
Wife’s [29/F] “Frenemy” [30/F] sent me an email outlining my wife’s attempt to reconcile with her Ex [35/M] (and sleeping with him) as we were getting more serious. I’m at work and don't know how to respond to any of this

Before she began dating her future husband, Katie had been in a long-term relationship with Mike. Their relationship ended after he left on an extended trip with his ex-girlfriend, and about a year later she started dating the Reddit user. But only a few weeks into their new relationship, Mike unexpectedly returned, creating uncertainty during an already fragile stage of their romance.
The tensions then escalated rapidly as the man's career ambitions threatened to pull them apart. He genuinely thought he'd have to move away after being rejected locally. That decision would have forced Katie to decide within months whether to relocate with him. Consumed by this stress, the man was hyper-focused on securing a future. As for his girlfriend, she was also stressed about how things would work out between them and entered an emotional spiral.

According to Katie, reconnecting with Mike began after they ran into each other at a party while she was anxious about the future of her new relationship. They met three times over roughly two weeks. During one meeting, they had s--, and during another they "fooled around" before she ended things for good and decided to move with her boyfriend. Around the same time, the couple had one of the biggest arguments of their relationship about whether she should relocate with him, but they eventually chose to stay together.
Nonetheless, at last, while they chose to move together, an unspoken wedge settled over their relationship, resulting in a complete absence of intimacy for a month. When questioned about baseline health precautions, Katie casually affirmed, "of course," allowing the secret to remain buried. However, over the years, they adjusted into their relationship, as they became transparent and loving. The woman transitioned into a homebody by locking away her past and building a life with her now-husband.

Everything changed when Danielle, Katie's longtime friend-turned-frenemy, emailed the husband detailing what had happened during those early weeks of dating. Within minutes, Katie texted him admitting the affair, explaining that she had met Mike three times after his return and deeply regretted what had happened. Before the couple had fully processed the revelation, Katie also surprised him with a positive pregnancy test after months of trying for a baby.

The man, who was already suffering from a severe cold, was stunned. He couldn't understand what had happened to him. After several difficult conversations, the husband decided to judge his wife by the years they had spent together rather than by a mistake made during the earliest stage of their relationship. The couple jointly cut Danielle out of their lives, blocked her after she dismissed the email as "a joke," and chose to focus on preparing for their first child instead.
Learning about infidelity years after it happened can be especially difficult because both partners are forced to reconcile two timelines — the relationship they believed they had and the newly revealed past. While this couple ultimately chose to move forward together, infidelity remains relatively common. According to the 2022 U.S. General Social Survey, around 16% of married Americans reported having engaged in sexual infidelity during their marriage. A 2024 meta-analysis by Warach, et al., involving more than 500,000 participants, similarly estimated the lifetime prevalence of sexual infidelity at 17.45% worldwide.

That being said, the people acknowledged the difficulty of the dynamics of this man's relationship. u/vitalesan wrote, "Such a tough situation for MC…. The 'it happened years ago' ones are always tough for the MC, because to them it just happened." Meanwhile, u/Appropriate_Leg_8332 commented, "I think it’s a real crappy thing to drop a positive pregnancy test on husband whilst he is processing your nefarious earlier behavior and is ill. That seems real sus and manipulative."
