Frustrated homeowner pens a sarcastic letter to HOA after landscapers cover her porch with debris

An HOA’s landscaping crew is supposed to clean up shared spaces, not create more work for homeowners. One couple, however, says their yard was left worse off after a visit from the team. On April 17, in a story shared on Reddit, u/Vegetable-Return explained how a squad of the HOA's landscapers uninvitingly marched into their home garden and trimmed away vegetation with leaf blowers, covering their porch in dirt and trash. Frustrated by the mess, their wife decided to take it up with the HOA — but instead of a standard complaint, she wrote a rather unhinged letter, saying she “eagerly awaits their reasoning” for the situation. The post has gotten 7,000 upvotes so far.

Landscapers with a good reputation

The author mentioned that their residential complex is maintained by a landscaping company whose men regularly visit their house to clean up the area and check whether something is disturbing the prescribed aesthetic appeal. The group, they described, used to remove weeds, trim bushes, mow the lawn, and plant new vegetation. Before this year, “it was beautiful,” they exclaimed. However, the latest visit changed everything.

A disastrous aftermath

In the post, the author described that they recently had a “horde of men with leaf blowers” visit their house to “landscape.” But instead of landscaping, their main purpose seemed to be to “kill everything in sight and blow all debris onto [their] porches.” Through her letter, the wife wanted to inquire and better understand the motives of these landscapers, so she got right to it. Hinting at 'destruction' being their primary job, she wrote to the HOA: “Do you know if they had some other purpose behind this?” sharing a photo of their dirt-smattered courtyard alongside it. “Now the courtyard is all dry topsoil, and my porch is covered in dirt,” she described.

The HOA's affinity for 'fines'

HOAs are supposed to keep neighborhoods in order, but for many homeowners, they end up doing the opposite. Around one in six homeowners have been fined by their HOA, often over landscaping-related issues like yard upkeep, which makes this situation all the more hypocritical. At the same time, 34% say their HOA isn’t fair in how it applies rules, while over 50% admit those rules are ones they don’t even agree with. Additionally, 22% of homeowners rate HOA communication as poor or outright terrible, which only makes situations worse when something goes wrong.

In the comments section, viewers supported the householder couple, urging them to blow it back in the face of the HOA. “This is what happens when they take the low bid for landscapers. Go to your meetings and complain publicly, ask to see the contract, etc. Join the board if you have to,” commented u/Amazing-Tea-3696. u/Leading_Procedure_23 remarked, “Tell them via certified mail that every day they fail to clean your area, you’re going to charge them a cleaning and disposal fee.”
