'You made such a big impact on my life, and I’m so grateful,' she said.
Most flights come and go without a word between strangers — people board, find their seats, and pass the time quietly, focused on where they’re headed. However, on United Flight 280 from San Antonio to Denver, a co-passenger turned into someone Hailey Ann would remember for the rest of her life. In a video shared on her TikTok page @haileyannsand, Ann described the moment she realized she might not make her connecting flight — and with it, the last chance to say goodbye to her grandfather.
She had booked the flight only hours earlier after learning that her grandfather been placed on "comfort care," indicating that there wasn't much time to waste. Seated in 31A, she was next to a woman in 31B. They hadn't spoken during the trip, but that changed when the plane landed. In the video, Hailey addresses her co-passenger, saying, "When I landed in Denver, Colorado, it was announced that some of us had a tight connection flight, and to raise our hand, and I was the person who raised my hand next to you... You asked me what was wrong, and I told you, 'If I don’t make this flight, I don’t think I’ll get to say goodbye.'"
When it became clear that no one was moving fast enough to let her through, the woman beside her stepped into the aisle without hesitation. She loudly called out to the cabin, asking everyone to step aside so Hailey could exit quickly, and that was enough. "We landed 25 minutes before my next flight was supposed to depart, and it was a 22-minute walk across the Denver airport," Ann explained. "We flew into like Gate 73-ish, and I was flying out of 12. I had to walk all the way across." But she made it. "I got to be there last night. I got to tell my grandfather how much I loved him. And he got to tell me back," Hailey said, her voice wavering.
She spent the next night and day by his side. When he passed, she was there, and she credits that stranger in 31B for making it happen. "You didn’t owe me anything. But you made such a big impact on my life, and I’m so grateful," she said. Viewers were moved by her story, and most expressed how the stranger was an angel in disguise. @united commented, "This is such a touching story. Thank you so much for sharing. Sending you and your family love and condolences during this time."
@kamdegree wrote, "I love hearing stories of people just being good and kind with no motive. I am so sorry for your loss, but so happy you got to be there with him and say goodbye." @scubanewb added, "May 31B always have green lights, the freshest coffee, and good hair days." @thairapybymandyb wrote, "As someone who flew back cross country in the same situation almost a year ago only to make it to have my grandpa take his last breath in my arms, I'm bawling right now." Many wished for the person to see the video, and it turns out, they did. In a comment update, Hailey shared, "We are in contact now. I will hopefully post an update video soon." We hope these two beautiful people can stay close for life.
