Man pounded his fists and yelled at his girlfriend in a park, so a bystander stepped in. He snapped 'mind your business' — but she wouldn't leave

‘I think I am okay’ sounded reassuring to him. Linda heard something less certain.

Seeing a couple argue loudly in public can leave bystanders wondering whether to step in or stay out of it. On October 6, 2026, Linda (@photosonthecusp) chose the former. While walking her dog, she saw a couple arguing in the park. When she saw the man pound his fist on the table while his girlfriend shrank beside him, she knew she needed to say something. The post was reshared by 213 people, and it received 10,900 likes and over 600 comments.

Everybody's business

Linda was walking her dog when she heard a couple arguing. The man was literally yelling at his girlfriend, so she decided to stay back and listen. "When he started pounding his fists on the table and yelling in her face, I walked over." The girlfriend was shaken, sitting on the bench, when Linda asked, "Do you feel safe? Can I walk you to a safe place?" Before she could respond, the boyfriend butted in and said their conversation was private. He told Linda to "mind her own business," to which she responded, "You are in a public park; verbal abuse becomes everyone's business, and I don't need to know the details to know you are not safe."

Then he stood up and yelled even louder. Linda said his raised voice did not intimidate her. Instead, she told him she wasn't going anywhere unless his girlfriend felt safe. The girlfriend then replied, "I think I am okay," and he immediately followed with, "See. She is fine." Linda pushed back: “NO, she said she THINKS she is ok.” She explained that this wasn’t a clear indication the woman felt safe with her leaving.

'Don't appease a man's fragile ego'

She turned to the young woman and said, "This is abusive. No relationship should make you feel like you have to shrink in on yourself and make yourself smaller to appease a man's fragile ego." Her comment infuriated him further, and he yelled louder than before. Linda calmly said, "I am a middle-aged woman with zero f---- to give. You are on federal land, so if the police end up here, you are effed." Linda suggested that he walk away for five minutes and return when he could speak calmly. She told the young woman that anger was understandable, but bullying and verbal abuse were not. According to Linda, the encounter lasted about five minutes, and he eventually calmed down. Before leaving, she told the woman, “We have got to have each other’s backs.”

Public bullying

Seeing couples arguing can be uncomfortable, and many choose to ignore them. A 2023 YouGov survey asked Americans what they would do if they encountered a couple arguing in public and couldn’t get away. 48% said they would try not to listen, while 31% said they would eavesdrop. Had Linda not stayed to listen, she wouldn't have had the chance to share her advice with the young woman. Another YouGov survey from 2022 discovered that 16% of couples had gotten into arguments in public places. Of these, men (19%) were more likely to argue with their partner in public compared to women (14%).

In a 2017 American Osteopathic Association release, psychiatrist Charles Sophy described bullying as "a coping strategy used to assert control when faced with personal limitations, whether intellectual, physical, or otherwise. A bully gains power in a relationship by reducing another's and shows little regard for the consequences to a victim’s health or well-being." He encouraged people who felt their power being diminished to question the health of the relationship.

Would've woken me up sooner

People commended Linda for what she said to the young woman and for showing her she shouldn't be scared of a bully. @christinajanelee commented, "Hopefully you gave her the flicker of an idea to leave." @somepeoplecallmeannie wrote, "I wish someone had done this for me during any of the times my ex was screaming at me and berating me in public. I know it’s complicated and women can pay for it later behind closed doors, but having someone else recognize and acknowledge that it wasn’t ok might have woken me up sooner."
