A wedding dress is more than just a piece of clothing—it's a garment that holds countless memories. Most people are hesitant to lend out their wedding dress, even for a single day. Newlywed u/IllustratorLow7925 recently turned to Reddit to ask if she was wrong for refusing to lend her dress to her sister.

"I recently got married and wore a beautiful wedding dress that my wife custom-made for me. It means a lot to me because she put so much love and effort into it. A few weeks after the wedding, my sister, who is getting married in six months, asked if she could borrow my dress," she wrote in the post. She then mentioned how she shared a great relationship with her sister, which was why she did not feel she needed to hold back her true sentiment when she declined her request and offered that they go dress shopping together instead.

The newlywed then shared that it made her sister "furious" when she declined her request. The sister went to their parents, who sided with her. "They argued that since she liked the dress so much, I should let her borrow it for one day. They called me a hypocrite for always saying I don't care for inanimate objects but still holding onto the dress like this," she wrote. She shared how, even after being pressured by her sister as well as her parents, she stood her ground. "The dress means a lot to me and I want to keep it safe. Now, everyone is calling me an asshole and my sister is barely speaking to me. I feel bad but also think I have the right to say no," she wrote before asking the community if they thought she was at fault for refusing her sister.

People took to the comment section to talk about the incident, with many unanimously agreeing that she was not wrong for not lending her dress. "Your family is overreacting. Good for you for holding your ground. Suggested script: I don't care for inanimate objects, but this was an incredibly loving gift from my wife. It is different. I will not be sharing or lending it, nor will I continue to have conversations about it. If you bring it up again, I will (hang up the phone/ leave the room/ go home). And then do so. Good luck!" said u/Foreign_Plan_5256. "Hide your dress. Like seriously, put it away in a locked box. There are so many stories of someone 'accidentally' ripping it since they couldn't have it," pointed out u/HighlyImprobable42.

"For real she may not be generally materialistic with designer fashion and flashy jewelry, but this is something else completely. A custom-made wedding dress made by the spouse is both unique and sentimental. It isn't something to be passed around when someone wants to save a few bucks," added u/JohnRedcornMassage. "Honestly, never loan anything if you would be devastated not to get it back. Even with the greatest care and attention, a beloved item could wind up damaged or lost through some terrible accident. It's not a good idea to put that kind of pressure on a relationship," commented u/minuteye.
