The woman spotted a little girl in her neighborhood having a strange conversation with a grown man and felt the need to intervene.
As humans, it becomes our moral responsibility to look out for others if we think they are in danger, especially when it comes to children. They are more vulnerable to those who hold ill intentions. A woman named Bonnie–who goes by @bonniesdoes on TikTok–shared a startling video where she recounted how she spotted a creepy man potentially grooming a young girl. Just like any other concerned person, Bonnie decided to step in but wondered if she made the right move. She turned to her TikTok audience for additional advice on the matter.
Almost every morning, Bonnie took a walk with her service dog and often spotted a little girl who lived nearby. The girl was mostly on her scooter, bike or rollerskates as her mom sat in their garage and tapped away on her phone. "Sometimes this little girl is on her phone listening to stuff and sometimes she's video calling someone. As she zooms by me, I'll see that somebody's on the screen of her phone and she's talking to them," Bonnie explained, sharing how she thought the girl must not be older than 11 or 12. But here is when she got concerned about the girl.
"I always assumed she was just Facetiming one of her kid friends, but today, as she kept going by me, I heard a man's voice," Bonnie stated. "I was like, maybe she is talking to her dad. I don't see a male parent around her, so maybe her parents are not together. Maybe she is talking to her dad or a male relative." At one point, Bonnie and her service dog paused at a stop sign on the street and the little girl was just by her side when Bonnie could fully eavesdrop on her conversation. "I was just like, why would a little girl be talking to a grown man? It felt weird. But I was listening to some of the things that that man was saying and I thought it was very odd. He was asking her to show him her outfit," Bonnie continued.
She felt that the man on the other end of the call sounded creepy and she was afraid that the little girl was probably getting groomed by a dangerous predator. When the little girl obliged and showed him her outfit, the man on the call complimented her and called her cute, which raised Bonnie's concerns even more. "There ain't no way the man on this phone knows her. All the alarm bells are going off in my head," Bonnie recalled. When Bonnie finally struck up a conversation with the girl, she began to act secretive and told Bonnie that she was chatting with her friend. "Then I heard the man's voice go, 'Don't tell anybody that I'm talking to you' and I was right," Bonnie spoke.
"As soon as I heard him, I say, 'Hey, does your mom know that you're talking to this friend?' And the guy was just like, 'I gotta go' and then she was like, 'Don't hang up, just give me a second,'" Bonnie said, adding that the young girl pretended that her mom knew about her friendship with the older man. The TikTok creator decided to get involved seriously and after having a small chat with her, the girl revealed that she met the man on Instagram. "I think you're talking to a creepy adult male and putting yourself in danger. I didn't wanna say that to her," she continued. The little girl requested Bonnie not to reveal her chat with her mom.
However, when Bonnie spoke to the girl's mom and mentioned all the red flags she spotted, the mom seemed not to care enough. Bonnie had to turn to her internet community to seek advice, wondering if she had overstepped her boundaries. The TikTok community promptly sided with her. @wee.radish commented, "As a child therapist, you did the right thing. Mom's reaction likely has more to do with her than it does with you. Happy to see you contacted the authorities." @angeldlv912 added, "You did not overstep. I'd take it a step further and call the police if mom isn't taking it seriously. Based on his questioning of her and what she told you, that dude is a creep."
@bonniedoes Idk what to do??? I feel like I should be doing more, but I don’t want to overstep! #helpplease #advice #internetsafety ♬ original sound - bonniedoes 🍉
