Workplaces have their own ethics, which can sometimes be controversial. Yet, some employees comply with them, while others remain defiant, finding a middle ground in what they perceive as inappropriate. In a similar case, a woman was recently accused of “distracting” her co-workers due to her choice of clothing. A viral TikTok video by @ultimatebykomi shows an employee being told by the female HR to dress more appropriately for work. The contentious incident, reported from the UK, has divided the internet, with some criticizing the “carefree” worker for wearing a “too short” and “tight” dress while others take a more liberal stance, calling out the “disgusting” manager.
The video begins with the woman confronting HR, who called her in after receiving complaints about her “revealing” outfit at work. The video cuts back to the woman receiving the email about her attire as she showed her viewers what she was wearing. “Apparently, it’s inappropriate. I don’t think it’s too bad,” she said. Following this, she decided to consult another senior employee, Matt. “I got an email from Paula this morning saying she’s not happy with what I’m wearing to work,” she explained to Matt while recording from her phone. “She said it’s ‘distracting.’ What was she referring to?” she asked, showing her current outfit.
Contrary to HR’s stance, Matt responded, “I think it’s appropriate work attire.” The next day, she had a meeting with Paula, who had raised the issue. Before heading to the office, she showed herself wearing “formal” attire. “Help me. I’m basically wearing the blazer, so she can’t be mad,” she told her viewers. “It is low cut, but who cares what she says?” the woman remarked as she approached Paula. The HR’s first reaction was not what she expected. “I must admit I’m slightly disappointed seeing how you’re dressed today,” Paula said. The woman brought up Matt’s opinion, but HR dismissed it, instead emphasizing that other co-workers had raised concerns. “We do need to address this issue because we are having comments from other members of the staff.”
“I don’t think it’s my fault if I’m distracting other staff members. That’s not on me, Paula,” the employee responded. HR elaborated on a comment from a co-worker, saying, “You’re begging for attention.” HR then asked, “Are you going to do anything differently?” The frustrated employee ended the conversation by saying, “I guess I’ll go shopping this weekend.” The video has garnered 4.3 million views, along with over 126k likes and sharp reactions.
@1sweetophelia commented, “I was fully prepared to support you, but then you stepped back from the camera.” @brandalynnraini added, “Girl, I was ready to be on your side, but it’s skin-tight and very short. It’s cute, but not suitable for work.” Disagreeing with HR, @missmeowcat noted, “It’s not appropriate for the office. However, if HR told an associate their outfit looked like they were ‘begging for attention,’ I would file my own HR complaint.” @bibahawkins opined, “I believe the comments about ‘begging for attention’ were inappropriate, but neither outfit is suitable for a professional setting.”
