The video of the woman speaking about her feelings after her first date with her boyfriend struck a chord with people.
The fast-paced nature of our lives today has killed slow romance and how. We yearn for instant gratification and yet long for leisurely walks, handwritten love letters and bouquets, all of which have been replaced by mere hand gestures like scrolling, typing and swiping. One woman recently shared her journey of finding love in the most organic way, which came as a breath of fresh air in a world dominated by social media algorithms. Samantha Wong–who goes by @samcity on TikTok–spoke about her feelings after her first date with her boyfriend and the video struck a chord with people, leading to many positive reactions.
"Despite me being in the best relationship I've ever been in my life, I wasn't actually very sure about my boyfriend after our first date," she says in her video. Reflecting on her dating history, she talked about how the majority of her first dates since university had been through dating apps. However, this method didn't always work and she hardly saw herself going on second dates. Things changed when she met her boyfriend "in the wild" through mutual friends. She admitted that she didn't feel much for him initially, at least not until their first date. "Our first date was the first time I saw him like that, and I wouldn't even say it was romantic because we were trying to take things slow," Wong said. "So it just felt like we were hanging out."
During their dating timeline, she realized the importance of taking things slow, which was something she feared initially. "I used to think you had to have romantic chemistry right away, but now realizing that can grow," she shared. She also talked about how her boyfriend had been on a date with her after six years of not being on dates, which made him tread pretty lightly as he wasn't used to all of this. Wong added that until the time she met her boyfriend, she always knew if it was a "yes" or a "no." "I have always been the person where if it's a no, it's a no right away, so the fact that it wasn't a no for me intrigued me," Wong said, before talking about the importance of compatibility. "So when you are going on a first date, think about like, 'Can I get along with this person, just as a person," she added.
The unconventional journey resonated with many viewers, who took to the comment section to express their thoughts. "Good flings feel like fireworks, good relationships feel like diesel engines," wrote @marconopolo. "University + App Dating is such a fast-paced phenomenon, slowing down was really important to me too when finding my boyfriend!!" shared @mothershou. @benjy584 asked, "What topics were you talking about? I'm meeting up with a girl for a first date I'm serious about, but I'm so nervous." Wong replied, "It was different for us because we already knew each other, but it was mostly asking what we were looking for." Another comment by @xobrnz read, "Same, in the best serious relationship ever now and it started off as a slow burn."
