Maintaining a home can be tough. Especially if you’re living alone or have just moved and if you have kids as well. Maintaining hygiene and cleanliness are some things we live by as it also gives us mental peace. The biggest menace in this process is that of bugs and cockroaches. Some fly while some crawl but both the kinds are equally nauseating to be around. Apart from being annoying and embarrassing, these creatures are also causes of food poisoning, bites, infections and other things. But you already know the problems, let’s come to a foolproof solution! Jessie Eden (@_faebae), a New Yorker, shared an easy solution to this pestering problem.

It is one that anyone can avail of, super quick, hassle-free and perfect for your pockets. She posted a video on TikTok where she started by saying, “Born and raised New Yorker. This is the hack to get rid of cockroaches and ants. I have used it for over 10 years in my pre-war building.” She continued to mention that when she doesn’t use this hack, the bugs come back in. She continued to break the curiosity by saying, “It’s just three ingredients, one of them is free.”

The ingredients required are a spray bottle, tap water and the hero, peppermint essential oil. She also mentioned, “This is strong stuff, you’ll smell why the bugs dislike it.” Eden went on to explain how to create the mixture. You start with water, “a little more than a half” which is three-fourths of the bottle. Next, the peppermint oil. Demonstrating in the video, Eden mentioned that she had a dropper with her oil and she used about one full dropper. She carefully said, "You can experiment with the amount you like to put in and you’ll know when it's enough.” This is mainly due to the areas you wish to use it in, the strong fragrance of the oil and so on.

She further said that once the ingredients are in the spray bottle, all you have to do is give it a good shake and spray it anywhere you like. Eden mentioned spraying in “the cabinet, kitchen sink, bathroom sink, doorway” and so on. That’s about it. It’s as simple as can be. Eden also mentioned a “bonus round” where she said, “I like to add the peppermint oil in my all-purpose cleaner and bathroom cleaner so the bugs won’t want to have anything to do with my house.” This is a natural hack and works wonderfully for all the busy, working adults, parents and others who need a quick but long-lasting remedy to these unwanted crawling creatures!

The video went viral, receiving millions of views and appreciation for the hack. Many even tried and testified to its success. Others suggested other creative ways and alternatives. @gelatofrancesca said, “If you have bay leaves, those work too. Just place them in the corners.” There is a precaution to take with this hack. Great pet care mentioned that peppermint oil has strong fumes that are captured by animals’ receptors, one must be cautious of using this hack if you have pets. The mixture has to be properly diluted in case of pets else it could turn toxic for them. Other than that, get going with your peppermint oil and water and spray on.
