She reveals the cool rule her parents followed when she entered adolescence that made her safe while exploring different experiences.
The relationship between parents and children is layered and complex. The dynamics in play always hinder both parties from coming to the same level and being open with each other. However, if such a situation gets established, the whole experience becomes a million times better and safer for both. Miss Ayah—who goes by @this.is.ayah_ on TikTok—shared a story that showcases how her being able to approach her parents freely helped her to explore adolescence securely. Her parents ensured that she knew that their door was always open and no judgment was waiting for her on the other side.
Ayah made this video as a stitch with Melissa, who goes by @melissajackpot on TikTok. The initial video asked, "What was the coolest rule your parents had growing up?" Ayah chimed in and said, "When I was in high school, my sister and I were always told that we'd never have to lie or sneak out the house if you wanna go to a party." Their only condition was that the sisters come to them and tell them where they are going. The parents would "drop us off and pick us up, be it 3:00, or 4:00 in the morning. They will fetch us if we've decided to go with friends." The parents would never stop them from partying because such a demand would be useless. It would be better if they were aware of their children's whereabouts so that they could prevent any wrongdoing.
As the kids grew older the basic principle of the rules remained intact with the parents providing them privacy. If the children ever found themselves in a situation from which they wanted to get out, all they needed to do was make a call to their parents. The parents wouldn't ask the girls any questions, they would immediately reach the location and get them back. "No matter what time it is, we phone them. My dad will get up and he will come pick us up, no questions asked," Ayah added. Many children especially when they are in high school are scared of asking parents for help, because they do not want to reveal certain parts of their life to them. Ayah's parents took the awkwardness out of the equation and made it easier for their kids to come to them for help. As Ayah mentions in the caption her parents were truly the "coolest" beans in the pod.
The comment section was in awe of the parents. @buhlehlophe1 shared how she also had parents with a similar parenting style and wrote, "My mom was like that too. She once told me to drink alcohol in the house 1st before trying it in the streets I was 16 and she doesn't drink." @zoemkoena commented on why the method is so effective, "This leaves room for kids to ask for your help whenever they mess up instead of getting in trouble." @leesatshabalala wrote how such actions keep the kids safe, "Rather you be the one picking them up then your kids sneaking out and never coming back. The world is so wicked now."
