As said by Canadian former ice hockey player Wayne Gretzky once, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." It is an illuminating statement for everyone trying to pursue their passions, but it is easier said than done. In today's world, success is idolized so much that rejection fills a person with dread. People would rather stay in their safe bubble than step out of it to achieve their aim. Helen Mae–who goes by @hmae on TikTok–has decided to have a "year of rejection" where she would ask for things she always wanted and pursue. In the video, she is recording herself before asking for a raise from her boss. The thought has been with her for a long time, but she has been scared to go through with it due to the fear of rejection. But now, she has decided to "girl boss" the whole thing and ask for what she believes she deserves.

Mae captioned the video, "Here's to getting rejected (or not) all of 2024!" She started the video by explaining the resolution. "I saw this TikTok of a girl who said that in 2023, she set out to be rejected as many times as possible," she said. "Basically, what she meant by that was she started not counting herself out of situations. She allowed other people to reject her." The woman wanted to put herself outside her comfort zone as she felt her fears were holding her back. She followed through with her promise and "started applying for jobs that she didn't think she was qualified for, in industries she didn't think she had enough experience in. She started reaching out to people that she didn't think would respond, putting herself in situations where she didn't think she necessarily belonged."

The "courage" of that girl paid off. Her entire life flipped upside down, with a job she never would have gotten had she not put herself out there and a great network of people. Seeing the positive results, Mae decided to incorporate this "plan of action" in her life for 2024. The task she chose to kick off this rejection spree was "asking my boss for a raise." She informs her viewers that she is about to hop on a call with her boss to discuss the same. The video then cuts to her elated face, with a text overlay that reads, "the face of a girl that just got a 25% raise." She ended the video with advice, "Guys, just ask for stuff." The worst that could happen is rejection, but if it follows through, the joy is immeasurable as evidenced by Mae's face.

The comments section was delighted for Mae. @kajuju_kiende shared her own mantra in such situations and wrote, "When applying for things, I tell myself that someone is getting paid to reject me and I will not be doing their job by rejecting/stopping myself." @xxyyzz_7 commented with their own experience, "I applied on a whim to a job that had super high qualifications, asking for tons of experience and I ended up getting it. Always try, you never know!!"
