Kemia Unwritten Howard said her daughter's reply truly showed how much she appreciated her

Getting a first car is a huge milestone for many teenagers. In fact, many would be over the moon if their parents even bought them a secondhand vehicle. But that was sadly not the case in Kemia Unwritten Howard's (@kemiahoward) household. Howard brought her daughter a brand new Honda as a graduation gift. Instead of a thank-you and a hug, the mother was met with an attitude. When she asked her daughter why she stormed off after seeing her gift, her ungrateful answer made Howard decide to sell the car. Posted on May 26, 2026, the Threads post has gained traction and received 19,900 likes, 8,500 comments, and 614 reshares.
Howard thought her daughter would be happy getting a free car that her mother paid for in cash. However, her reaction was quite the opposite. Howard attached a screenshot of her iMessage conversation with her daughter and a photo of the car. Howard mentioned that it did not seem like she liked the car, to which her daughter replied, "I don't. I was expecting to get a Benz or a BMW. I appreciate you, Mom, but it's just not my style. You drive a G Wagon, so me driving a basic Honda is weird." The daughter felt entitled to her mother's money simply because her mother drove an expensive car. Instead of spoiling her daughter and giving her what she wants, Howard put her in her place.

Howard began by stating the fact that her daughter had just graduated from high school. She called her daughter "ungrateful" for the way she reacted. She was lucky enough to have a roof over her head, no bills to pay, college fees sorted out, and no one rushing her to leave home. In Howard's words, her daughter's life was "set." She also pointed out that her daughter was not appreciative, even if she said so.
Instead of accepting the gift, she stormed out and left. She added, "If you're not going to drive the car, I will sell it. I'm not going to kiss a child's a**. I'm 45. I worked hard for my G Wagon... you didn't work hard for anything yet! How dare you." Her daughter's reply truly showed how much she appreciated her. She wrote, "Just sell it, Ma. I don't want it."

Not everyone is lucky enough to receive a car as a graduation gift, and even then, Howard's daughter was not happy with the kind of car her mother got for her. The National Retail Federation conducted a survey to see what people would most likely get for graduates in 2026. Half of them voted for cash, 38% would gift graduates a greeting card, 30% would send gift cards, 16% would buy apparel, and 13% would indulge in electronics. None of them mentioned cars, which goes to show how rare and expensive a graduation gift like that can be. The survey also revealed that the average expected spending on graduation gifts this year would be $116.84, and the total expected spending is $7.2 billion.
People in the comment section were furious on behalf of the mother. @tonya.dede commented, "Say less. Just take the car back. I wouldn't reward bad behavior with a car. I say bad behavior because of how she reacted to getting a Honda. Let her buy her own car and get something she wants to drive." @kahhpua wrote, "Ma’am, I’ll be your daughter and be damn grateful for a free paid-off car. Kids are wild nowadays."
