Though she doesn't consider herself 'ugly,' the woman explains what she truly meant by 'ugly privilege' and it resonated with many.
As the saying goes, "Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder," everyone is beautiful in someone's eyes. However, society might deem a woman unattractive based on how appealing she is to men. Content creator, Sarah—who goes by @sarahs.tok on TikTok—shared her outlook on this topic and the internet nodded along. Oftentimes, Sarah had mentioned having "ugly privileges" in her videos and recently, she explained what she actually meant by "having ugly privileges." On receiving several reassuring responses saying she wasn't "ugly," Sarah wanted to deliberate her perspective.
Firstly, Sarah thanked the users for the flattering reassurance. "But when I say I have ugly privilege, it's not that I necessarily think I'm an ugly individual," Sarah pointed out. She mentioned that she had often been called "pretty" throughout her life and she didn't believe herself to be ugly. "When I say I have ugly privilege, what I mean by that is men, in general, don't find me attractive," she explained. While many women are constantly disturbed by men's attention, Sarah says that her "ugly privilege" was being left alone by men.
"For the most part, men think I'm ugly and leave me alone and to me, that's a privilege," she said. Sarah knew that men were not attracted to her because they didn't flirt with her, hit on her, try to get her phone number or even ask her out. "Men, in real life, mostly leave me alone. It's very rare that I get male attention in real life which is why it makes me so freaking uncomfortable when it happens," she added. So, by "ugly privilege," Sarah was talking about the privilege of being left alone by men which made her life more comfortable and safer.
This video gained over 1.4 million views and many users could relate to Sarah's point of view. "We are just invisible. Men take no notice and, while it does hurt the ego a bit, it leaves us feeling comfortable and relatively safe in most situations," said @da.neilya. "I gained weight after having my son and men basically ignore me now, I have been so unmotivated to lose weight because it’s been so nice. I used to get harassed constantly, and couldn’t escape it," mentioned @variegatedmonsteraplants. "I gained weight and actually liked no longer having that attention. I never thought about it as an 'ugly privilege,' but I love this!" added @joannagains.

In a follow-up video, Sarah spoke about people who thought she was lying about her "ugly privilege" making life comfortable for her. "They think I'm lying to myself in order to make myself feel better," she mentioned. However, she clarified that she had been living with this mindset for the past decade. Though she yearned for male attention in her teens and early 20s, she said that being left alone by men seemed "freeing" now. She even opened up about some male attention she received when she was younger which has become a rare occurrence now. But for Sarah, those kinds of attention don't matter anymore.
