The husband's reaction was priceless. At first, he felt a little confused, but once he realized what she was up to, he couldn't stop smiling.
Alexis Rogers (@alexisgrace.r) confesses that she’s terrible at keeping secrets, but when her husband returned home for the holidays, she managed to pull one off. Rogers had been secretly planning a surprise for her husband. Before his arrival, she moved everything into a new house. When she picked him up from the airport and drove him to the new house, his sweet reaction washed away all the tiredness and melancholy she felt during the 11 months she spent waiting for her beloved spouse. Recently, Rogers took to TikTok to share two clips showing the details of this surprise.
"When you pick your husband up from an 11-month deployment and little did he know you have been moving us into a house for the past two and a half weeks without him knowing,” she wrote in the text overlay of the first clip. The clip showed Rogers driving her husband in a car. Reaching the house, she stopped the car. Slightly taken aback, her hubby, dressed in military uniform, peered through the glass window to see a pastel yellow house standing at a distance across a cobblestone street.
For a few moments, he kept looking at the house. With a puzzled expression, he turned to look at Rogers, expecting an explanation. But instead of an explanation, he received something unexpected. Rogers extended her arm and slipped a pair of keys into his hands. “That’s crazy,” were the only words he could utter. He was in such disbelief that when he opened his mouth to laugh, he could only let out a chuckle. With shaky hands, he unbuckled his seat belt and stepped out of the car, gazing at the property, his new house.
The clip amassed 4 million views in less than a week. Relating the backstory, Rogers shared in her video caption that they had found the house before her husband went on his deployment. Her parents bought the house and rented it out while he was away, with the intention that the couple would purchase it from them when the deployment ended. Fortunately, the renters moved out of the house two months earlier than the expected date. As a result, Rogers got some prep time to renovate the house and relieve him of the responsibility of working on it when he returned.
"Preparing the house was all about timing and creativity," she told Newsweek. "Since there was an eight-hour time difference, I mostly worked on it while he was sleeping, to keep it a surprise." To accomplish the task, Rogers sought help from her parents and family members. "I focused on making the space feel cozy and welcoming by decorating for the holidays, organizing every corner, and adding personal touches that I knew would make him smile," she said. "It was so hard not to tell him.” When he made it back to the USA, she was still painting the house.
Three days after posting this clip, Rogers posted Part 2 of this surprise, where the camera captured the couple jumping out of their cars and walking into their new house. The clip displayed a street featuring gray, hut-roofed houses with a sprinkle of golden-green trees spread out in the daylight. After exiting their car, the couple walked arm-in-arm along a trail lined with the tiny flags of America. Patches of soil and fallen leaves surrounded the trail. Crossing the front staircase, the couple stepped inside the house.
Rogers pushed open the white wooden door and ushered her hubby inside, and he couldn’t stop smiling by this time. After successfully delivering her surprise, Rogers blushed and cupped her mouth with a palm while chuckling merrily. Beside the front door, the pastel yellow wall displayed a poster featuring word art. In one corner, standing on the glossy wooden floor, was a large Christmas tree embellished with sparkling ornaments and ribbons. The house was well-furnished with a plush sofa that rested on the tree’s side.
Rogers led her beloved from room to room, revealing her surprise decorations and laughing every once in a while, probably out of excitement. “Do you like it?” she asked him while giving him a cozy hug. While the army man explored the different areas of the house, Rogers couldn’t stop jumping up and down with joy. It was the moment of homecoming and reunion.
Thousands of people chimed in the comment section and congratulated the lovely couple. "The little flags are such a cute touch," exclaimed @amandalane0220. @squigglyjittlefeep said, "This is literally the nicest thing you could ever do as a partner." With a sobbing emoji, @allycatt04 wrote, "I am crying. I love happy little moments in this big old world we live in!" @user24118272449301 complimented Rogers, "She's a keeper. Good military wife!"
The purpose of moving into the house in advance was that the couple could spend their Christmas together in the new house. "He was relieved that he wouldn't have to deal with moving in and decorating after only being home for a few weeks," she said. "We were both thrilled to spend Christmas in our own house instead of at my parents' place."
@alexisgrace.r back story: Before he deployed we found a house we loved and so my parents bought the house and had renters in it for a year while he was gone and then we would buy the house from my parents when my husband got back. We gave the renters notice to be moved out by January 7th but instead they moved out NOV.14th. So I decided to not tell him that they moved out early and surprise him with being moved in by the time he got home december 7th and in time for Christmas!! ❤️ I had told him we were going to drive by the house on our way to my parents house (where we had been living) to look at the new roof that was just put on that week.
