Being in a relationship means having each other's back, but that blind trust always has a breaking point. One California woman (u/Double_Flower3855) learned that lesson the hard way. She got engaged to a man from London she met on MySpace. He already had a history of taking government unemployment while working under the table for cash, but things spiraled once he flew out to visit. Every time they went out, his debit card failed, or his wallet mysteriously stayed behind. This eventually led her to shoulder nearly $2,000 in expenses. The wake-up call hit before he made it to the airport, when screenshots of him arrived on dating apps. The author revealed what she did next on Reddit on October 26, 2026, garnering over 800 upvotes.

A digital connection in London

The romance began during the peak of MySpace, linking the Californian woman with a British man from London. Though they became engaged, there was no ring on her finger. The man had only provided a vague reassurance that he would buy her "whatever I wanted down the road." Even then, red flags quietly sat in plain view. On his personal blog, he openly documented working off the books in the admissions office of a friend's school, taking cash in hand while simultaneously drawing weekly government unemployment benefits.

The six-week Hollywood visit

The real trouble started when he arrived at her home for an extended six-week stay. Almost immediately, a frustrating routine took over every time the bill arrived. The man's debit card would fail, prompting claims that he had to "call my bank later," or his wallet was left behind entirely. Wanting to be a supportive partner, the woman covered every meal and outing. By the end of his visit, the unpaid tabs and expenses had climbed up to nearly $2,000, and she even had to hand over an old charity-bound suitcase just to pack his things.

Unmasking the betrayal

By the time he packed to leave, she was counting down the hours. Having refused to drive him to the airport on account of some important work down the week and she needed to prepare for it, she dropped him off at the local train station. But suspicion prompted her to reach out to a cousin. Before he had even crossed the county line, proof arrived. "I got screenshots of him on apps looking for love. Claiming to be single, wearing shoes and clothing I bought him, and I was the one who took the photos!" she revealed. That was the last straw for her.

The immediate retaliation

Furious at the sheer audacity, she struck back using the travel logistics she controlled. Given that she was the one who booked his return flight on her own card, she logged on to her account and reassigned him to the worst possible seat. But this was just the beginning. When he landed back in London, he called in tears to profess that he "missed me and couldn't live without me," completely unaware that she knew the truth. After a week, she demanded her money back.

It was at this point that the man's emotional facade vanished instantly as he admitted he was entirely broke. "But you were working for your friend at that school, and you were also getting money from the government for unemployment. How is it that you have no money?" She questioned. Furthermore, she pointed out his infidelity, leaving the man completely speechless. He simply hung up the phone, ending their conversation permanently. But the woman wasn't done just yet.

Reporting suspected benefit fraud

Determined not to let the deception slide, she tracked down his local unemployment office in Ealing. Then she compiled a detailed dossier. Posing as a concerned friend of his girlfriend, she submitted an email with his full travel history, proof that he missed check-ins, screenshots of his blog, and the name of the school. She reported what she believed was benefit fraud, sending the local office screenshots from his blog, details of his work and his six-week travel history. Within an hour, she noticed the blog had been wiped, though she said she never learned whether authorities investigated or took action. Years passed after this, until one day she saw the man on her YouTube suggestions in a terrible state. She simply chose the "do not recommend" option and moved on.

Importance of financial compatibility

Money can become a major fault line in relationships. In a 2025 LendingTree survey of 2,049 U.S. consumers, including 1,178 people in exclusive relationships (ages 18 to 79 from Jan. 16 - 21, 2025), 23% said they had ended a previous relationship because of financial incompatibility, while another 34% said they would consider doing so in the future. Among people currently in relationships, 67% said financial compatibility was very important.

Best money she ever spent

This is also the reason why people stated that those $2,000 saved her from a lifetime of struggle. u/JustBob77 wrote, "And it only cost you $2K to get rid of this Leacher! Consider that the best money you’ve ever spent!" At the same time, u/Minflick commented, "$2000 is a cheaper lesson than it might have been had you not woken up when you did... It could have been a bunch worse if you had not realized what garbage he was when you did."
