The husband often refused to help with household chores. But his own tactic backfired when he invited his friends over

A happy marriage is based on shared responsibilities, but unfortunately, not many understand it. A daycare owner (u/naptime16) experienced just that when their husband refused to help them clean up for their guests. But his own tactic backfired when he once invited his friends over to their house, and his partner refused to help him in any way. The post, shared on July 20, 2026, has received over 9,500 upvotes.
The author explained that their home-based daycare ran for about 12 hours a day, which kept them busy with cleaning most of the time. They said they don’t particularly enjoy having guests in the house, because then the workload increases tenfold. In fact, whenever guests are over, the author explained that they have to work extra to manage the house. And each time they asked their husband for help, he would often dismiss them. "My husband dramatically complains that I'm 'doing too much' and that I shouldn't be rushing to clean because 'They're just your friends, they don't care,'" the author confessed. His grouchy behavior often left his partner frustrated and exhausted.

However, his tactic backfired the other day when the man invited his friends. "I said that I had a really stressful week, so I wasn't feeling up to guests. And he insisted that it was his guest and not my problem," the author recalled. But just before his guests arrived, the husband started complaining about his dirty private space. In fact, he insisted his partner and their kids help him clean while he played video games. The author refused and declared, “Oh, don't worry, your friends won't judge,” then took the kids for a movie. He blamed them for being petty. Their own mom said that they shouldn’t have been too dramatic. But the author said they believe their husband is a grown man and can handle such petty challenges himself.

A Pew Research Center report suggested that sharing household chores is one of the keys to a successful and good marriage. In fact, more than half (56%) of the married US adults admitted that sharing household chores is “very important.” However, many surveys indicate that men still contribute less to housework than women. Another survey of 5,152 US adults revealed that women spend more time on household chores and caregiving while men spend more time on work and leisure. In households where both men and women are engaged in full-time jobs, 31% of children reported that their mothers did more housework.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, u/ItsMeTheButter commented, “Husbands like this need a dose of petty on occasion.” Similarly, u/Overall_Matter_2520 said, “Nothing bothers me more than hearing a ‘father’ is playing video games while his children are still up and the mother is still working. He doesn’t care because the cleanliness of the house does not reflect on the man as it does the woman.” u/Dutch1721 suggested, “His ways are one-sided. I would have done the same. Match his energy. Don’t be taken advantage of.”
