One bride planned not to include her sister in her wedding celebrations due to her sexuality and their mother decided to take a stand against it.
Siblings mostly have a bittersweet relationship between them. They might not hesitate to fight each other, but at the same time, they are expected to be loving and supportive of each other's preferences and life choices. However, one sister was not quite accepting of her younger sister's sexuality and their 49-year-old mother, u/Worldly-Surprise6288, found herself torn between her feuding daughters. She shared her story on Reddit and expressed her reluctance to attend her older daughter's wedding for her behavior.
The mom's two daughters, Tracy, 23 and Caitlin, 17, were not very close while growing up but when Caitlin came out as bisexual at 13, the dynamics between the sisters completely changed. The people around Caitlin swiftly accepted her, but Tracy was not too happy. Caitlin also started dating a girl from her class and Tracy got engaged to a guy at 21 years old. "Tracy always dreamed about having the perfect wedding, which is in two weeks. After making last-minute changes and just going over the plans, she showed me the seating plan. I realized Caitlin was not on the chart. I asked her about it and she said she didn't invite her because she was scared of making the family look bad in front of her fiancés family," the mom wrote.
The mom was surprised at Tracy's behavior, who revealed she didn't want her in-laws to know about Caitlin's "lifestyle." Tracy closed the conversation with her mom by sticking to her decision and not inviting Caitlin. "I had so much more to say about the matter, but without any hesitation, I said, 'If your sister is not invited, you should give my seat away to someone because I will not be coming.' I grabbed my things and left. All I heard as I was walking out the door was my daughter crying and begging me to come to the wedding because she needed her mum there," the mom explained, adding that she then started planning a mini vacation with Caitlin and her girlfriend instead of attending the wedding.
Caitlin was upset when she found out about this and when the mom talked to Tracy about it, she said it was her "fiances' idea and she went along with it." The mother finally turned to the Reddit community, seeking some sound advice on this complex matter. u/Active-Tie4893 remarked, "You are a good mother and Tracy is the hypocrite for doing this to her only sister just to save face. If her future in-laws have a problem with her sister and partner and she is still marrying into that family, then she doesn't deserve you and her sister. It takes a brave person to come out, especially with how sick the world is now. But don't let her guilt you into changing your mind if she would not invite her sister and her partner."
u/FutureDrHowser commented, "Some people have the weirdest priorities. I have seen many people support their family members through gambling, substance abuse, cheating, criminal charges, etc. and yet throw out the gay or trans child at the drop of the hat." u/kek2015 added, "I commend you for standing behind your daughter. I wish her sister had the same sense of loyalty and love. I would have done the same thing. I wouldn't even want to have much to do with this family she was marrying into if they were that judgmental."
The mother decided to make an update and revealed how the wedding celebrations went down. The mom ended up attending the wedding with her younger daughter in tow and her son-in-law's parents also complimented Caitlin on her outfit. Tracy wanted her mother to come along with her to continue the nuptial celebrations, but she refused. She decided to go back home with Caitlin as the older sister threw a dirty look at her. She hopes to sit down and talk with Tracy and will wait to see what happens to the future of their mother-daughter bond.
