Money is the skeleton in the closet that, when brought up, can sometimes create friction in friendships. Leaving this friction unresolved creates knots in the relationship, which often harbour long-term resentment and perhaps the crumbling of the friendship. In a July 8, 2026, Reddit post, a 21-year-old woman (u/Adventurous_Ad_2712) shared an episode of a birthday party where her friends shamed her into spending more than she owed. While the other girls ordered boatloads of food, she just ordered a simple snack, yet when she refused to split the bill evenly, the women became offended and started cursing her for being indigent.

Birthday party turned into a brawl

It was the birthday party of one of her friends, and around eight women were invited. Before the party, they deposited £1,000 ($1,342.39) to secure the table. The woman even calculated an estimate of food and service charges and realized she could be short by £11.90 ($15.97), so she decided to order accordingly. While other girls were ordering shiploads of meals, including steak, lobster pasta, multiple cocktails, and sides, she adhered to the simple appetizer of chicken and chips, plus a dessert and two drinks.

To her delight, the meals cost her less than expected, and she only needed to spend £79.10 ($106.19). However, just then, one of the girls in the group slammed the idea that the bill should be split evenly. The woman protested that she wasn’t obliged to pay an extra £50 ($67.12) when all she ate was a starter. While the birthday girl remained quiet and stared blankly, one of the rowdy women started shaming her for being substandard and falling short of money.

Friendship broken over money

The trivial argument escalated into a heated debate, but lucky for her, the bill was already covered by her initial deposit. So she left the party with her boyfriend, who was there to pick her up. The following morning, she received a horde of text messages from the birthday girl, who criticized her for ruining her birthday. The woman apologized to her with the explanation that she didn’t owe that extra money. The girl hasn’t responded to her messages, leaving her in limbo. But she was okay with not being friends with her anymore because, essentially, she didn’t do anything wrong.

When friendships turn into transactions

Friendship might be a selfless relationship, but in social settings, sometimes, it can turn extremely costly, especially for the one who is hesitant to break the relationship. According to the Self.Inc Cost of Friendship Study, 52.1% reported that they had had an argument with friends about money and 44.7% said they had distanced or cut off a friend over disagreements about money. Another survey by Bread Financial reported that 65% of people reported that they had to spend more than the intended amount of money when eating out with friends just to keep the friendship intact.

Readers sympathized with the young woman, agreeing that she is not to blame for the birthday girl’s disappointment. u/Vampyriya_13 said, “The broke ones are the ones ordering extra food and drinks, waiting for others to foot the bill… 'if they can't afford to pay their consumption, they shouldn't go out to dinner.'" u/Speedyky commented, "Splitting the bill always benefits the ones who ordered more than the others. No need to split the bill when you had a sensible meal."
