Instead of handling the cheque routinely when the waitress dropped off the bill, Serena's date said, 'She'll pay. It's the least she can do'

The modern dating world is undeniably weird, populated by ghosting, endless swiping, and awkward small talk. But every so often, an encounter goes so far past the boundaries that it leaves the realm of standard dating horror stories entirely. This was the kind of interaction Michael Brown's (@yourbestiemisha) friend Serena had as their date set a whole new benchmark for bizarre first dates. Brown took to Threads to detail the entire incident with his friend on July 1, 2026, in a clip that now has over 42,000 views and counting.
What began as a standard date for Brown's friend Serena quickly took an unexpected turn when the bill arrived. Instead of handling the cheque routinely when the waitress dropped off the bill, her date said, "She'll pay. It's the least she can do." Obviously, she was left stunned by the statement and asked the man what he meant by that. He explained that he refuses to pay for women, asserting that footing the bill is a "female tax" women owe men for building the world.

Refusing to tolerate this type of misogynistic insult, Serena took immediate action to excuse herself from the situation. She grabbed the cheque from the table, walked directly to the waitress, and paid only for her portion of the meal. Without uttering another word to her date, she turned around and walked out of the restaurant, leaving him behind, which she revealed through the text she sent to Brown. However, the exchange didn't end there.
The next day, the confrontation spilled over to text messages where the man labelled Serena and other women as "low class" and "gold diggers" who only want equality as long as it suits them. Naturally, she was not going to sit back and take these insults. She hit back at him, suggesting that paying wasn't the issue, but what he said was. Nonetheless, things got really quiet when Serena pressed him about what part of the world he built, after which he just stated that today's women were "too masculine." She brought the conversation to a close by being an absolute savage, telling the man to finance his own burger.

This bizarre incident only further goes to show how difficult dating has gotten with time. In fact, about 75% of daters say that finding a date has become very or somewhat difficult in the last few years or so due to several reasons. While about 53% find it challenging to find someone with the same dating goals as them, others, nearly 46%, find it hard to approach people, according to Pew Research's study.
Amid all this, people believe staying single might be the way to go about their love life. @drayawelida noted, "Exhibit A of why I told my big sis, 'Have you seen what's out there?' when she asked me if I was planning on staying single." Meanwhile, @stephanie.ferguson.tx suggested, "She should have asked him who built him. A woman. We built everybody!"
