4 years after her baby was kidnapped, she saw a girl at a party with a familiar face — so she took a strand of hair to be sure

The story of Delimar Vera's kidnapping gained so much attention that several documentaries have been made about it. Vera appeared on The Tamron Hall Show (@TamronHallShow) on April 14 to share a little more about her story. Vera was 6 years old when her birth mother found her, but she was kidnapped when she was just 10 days old from her house during a fire. All this time, her birth mother thought she was dead until she saw a little girl who looked like her daughter at a birthday party.

At the young age of 6, Vera was confused and scared. She did not know who her real family was or who to trust. She shared with Tamron that she actually saw her birth mother at a birthday party, but did not know it was her at the time. Their first interaction was when Vera's mother went upstairs to "use the bathroom." They saw each other in the hallway, and the mom pretended there was gum stuck on Vera’s hair so she could collect strands for a DNA test. Carolyn noticed Vera's birth mother walking behind her as they came downstairs, and panicked. Vera recalled that they left in a rush, and the memories of that day were still fresh in her mind. She said that she could feel something was wrong, but did not know what it was. Everyone in her family was extra nice after she and her mother got home from the party. But that was just the beginning.

Carolyn was asked to do a DNA test to confirm if Vera was her real daughter. While they were in the hospital, Carolyn took Vera to the bathroom several times and sprayed a strange liquid in her mouth. She was told not to swallow it, but did anyway. It wasn't until later that Vera found out Carolyn was actually spraying her own saliva inside her mouth to rig the test. Carolyn was convicted in 2005, with a 9-year prison sentence, which Vera thought was too short. Despite what Carolyn did to Vera, she still felt sorry for the woman and her family, and said, "You destroyed so many people's lives around you, but you know, she didn't destroy me or my mother's life because we continued by the grace of God."

The monthly case report from February 2026 from the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) recorded 26,278 active missing persons cases, with a total of 64,660 total resolved missing persons cases in the U.S. 15,483 are active unidentified persons cases, out of which 9,048 cases have been resolved. Florida is the number one state with missing persons (187), and Illinois is the lowest on the list (13). Cases like Vera's, where a child goes missing and is found years later, are not too uncommon. In 2026, a woman by the name Christina Maria Pante went missing in 1994 and was found 32 years later. She just vanished while walking to a nearby horse stable. Another case was that of Melissa Highsmith. She was reunited with her family 51 years later after she was kidnapped as a toddler. Luis Armando Albino was kidnapped when he was six years old, and found 73 years later, all thanks to DNA testing that was done by his niece.

Vera does not limit her identity to just a survivor. She called herself a mother, wife, and working woman on Tamron's show. In terms of her personal life, Vera has been happily married to Isaiah for more than two years. Vera's story has been turned into a film. @GigiAllenStarfish wrote, "This was a lifetime movie." @vuksgitau pointed out that the fire was not random. They wrote, "A fire the kidnapper caused, mind you."
