'Sir, I may have left you last year. I did not leave you retroactively a decade ago!'
A routine letter from the child maintenance service usually means dull paperwork. For one mother, however, it became the reason to completely tear down a decade of marriage. The letter stated that child support payments for her two children were being cut. While this was enough for her to be stunned, but it was the reason behind it that made read the letter 17 times. As it turned out, the father was now financially responsible for another child the same age as her oldest. When she confronted him, he refused to give answers and insisted it was none of her business. But it kept eating at her as she reached out to hosts Carly Harris and Tash Blake-Ivy on the Not As We Planned podcast (@NotAsWePlanned) on October 20, 2026, which garnered over 82,000 views and 1,000 likes.
The ordeal began when an official letter from the child maintenance service arrived in the mail. It announced an immediate reduction in regular support payments for her two children. The official paperwork revealed the staggering reason behind it. As it turned out, the father, from now on, had a financial responsibility for an additional dependent. Naturally, this alarmed her, and she re-read the letter 17 times just to be sure. But the most shocking news came to her when she matched the timeline of the child, which was the same as her eldest.
Armed with the agency's document, the mother immediately confronted her former partner for answers. However, he shut down the conversation instantly. He claimed that the matter was none of her business. Even more so after she had moved out. "Sir, I may have left you last year. I did not leave you retroactively a decade ago," she fired back. Despite her pleas, he refused to share the mother's name, the child's location, or any kind of explanation. This left the woman with no choice but to search through the past for answers.

She recalled quiet whispers from years earlier surrounding a female friend who had a baby around the same time. While she had been made to feel irrational back then, the revelation validated her worst instincts. This suspicion that her ex had conceived a secret child with someone during their marriage left her devastated. She struggled to process the sheer scale of the deception. "I can cope with the relationship ending. I can even eventually process cheating, but I feel like I'm discovering that huge parts of my adult life were built on information that simply wasn't true," she admitted.
While this woman continues to struggle for closure, her reality sheds light on a broader topic. This deals with men fathering children with more than one woman. According to a Child Trends report, 5% of men across the United States bear children with two or more women by the age of 25. This number increases to 8% at the age of 30. From then onwards it keeps on increasing all the way to 15% by the age of 40 years.

As for the people, they want this to end immediately. @sanctumbyrachael wrote, "This should be illegal. My husband married and had a child with me without informing me he was in a significant amount of debt. How can we make life-changing decisions without all the facts?" Meanwhile, @marieclaire1867 pointed out, "What’s probably happened is that his new gf has put him on CMS for her children! To reduce the amount! It's BEYOND COMMON and the oldest trick in the book!"
