'Everything this man told me was a lie. And he was dangerously good at it,' she confessed

A woman u/fitguarantee37 (on Reddit) thought she'd found the man of her dreams, until a tiny detail on Facebook revealed she'd, in fact, dodged a red flag. Ever since they started dating, her boyfriend told her that his parents had died in a tragic accident when he was only 10. The author believed him and never questioned him regarding the loss. However, that changed when she was scrolling through social media and stumbled upon his mom's Facebook profile. One quick look at her page confirmed her biggest fear: her boyfriend had been lying about his parents' death all this time. "Everything this man told me was a lie. And he was dangerously good at it," the author confessed in a post shared on August 15. Her story has received over 5,000 upvotes.
The author was really happy in her relationship. In fact, she described her boyfriend as a perfect gentleman. "He paid for everything. Planned dates. Asked questions. Paid attention, remembered details about me, and waited on physical intimacy," the author confessed. However, their relationship changed when she first noticed a discrepancy in his social media name. Confused, the author questioned him about whether he used a different name on social media, but he immediately refused.

Confused, she dug deeper into the investigation, and soon, things came unfurling like roots from the soil. The author realized that her boyfriend mostly had girls following him on Instagram. She did confront him about it, but he shrugged it off as if nothing happened. Then, the author's sister recognized her boyfriend as a dog breeder. "I asked him, and he flat out lied to me on my couch. I told him I found the accounts he was using to sell the puppies," she recalled.
When the man realized he might be caught lying, he victimized himself. He started crying while recounting his sad stories, especially losing his parents so young. However, the author knew something was off. So, she started investigating, and what she found left her cold in her tracks. "He lied about his age. He lied about his name. I found the charges; he’s currently on probation," the author explained. Moreover, she found his mom's Facebook page and realized she was alive. As it turned out, the man hadn’t just lied to her, but fabricated a whole new identity that was entirely fictitious. "I cannot believe people like this exist. I am concerned — not only does he know where I live, but he also lives across the street from me,” she expressed, probably frightened. In a comment, she updated that she was planning to file a report against him.

The world is full of people whose appearance is just a cover-up for their dark secrets. In fact, in an interview with Discover magazine, a psychologist and the creator of the PCL-R tool shared that 1 in 100 people are psychopaths who are experts in blending in with people like cold-blooded chameleons. However, their presence can be detrimental to those with whom they interact. "Psychopathic men have a personality style that makes them appear attractive to women in dating encounters. This may be because they are extra confident or feel at ease or know exactly what to say to get the attention of women,” researcher Kristopher Brazil of Brock University told PsyPost.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, u/EmmalouEsq commented, “Gross. At least it wasn't very long. You're a great investigator; be proud of that!” Similarly, u/tough_brain7982 remarked, “That, ladies and gentlemen, is a pathological liar.”
