He made her Venmo him $30 for garbage bags, before breaking up over paper towels. 2 months later, a red light revealed the real reason he split

She thought his increased use of steroids was the reason for his weird behavior, but she was wrong

More often than not, when a years-long relationship comes to an end, the reason behind it is significant. So when a woman's (u/sambitionss) year-and-a-half-long relationship with her partner ended just because of her habit of using too many paper towels and too much toilet paper, she was left stunned. For months, the only logical reason she could come up with was her partner's increased use of steroids. That was until one day, while waiting at a red light, she saw her partner. What unfolded next made her connect the dots and realize the reason for the breakup wasn't her petty habits. She revealed the entire story on Reddit on August 10, 2026, garnering over 1,700 upvotes.

Cracks started to emerge

Two months before the couple actually split up, things started to go south. After the woman suffered a traumatic incident during her work trip, she expected her partner to offer support. Instead, she was met with cold deflection. He prioritized his own ego over her pain. But that wasn't all; he even crossed all boundaries by blaming her for the incident. From then on, things between the pair entered a downward spiral. Every time the woman wanted to express her feelings, he'd shut her down, telling her she was "overreacting," "keeping track," or "blowing things out of proportion."

Unchecked aggression kept rising

As he ramped up steroids further, the man's weird, erratic behaviors started to pop up every so often. Moreover, he was always talking to the author about household expenses. One time, he asked her to Venmo him $30 for "using too much" paper towels and toilet bags. Another time, he got angry at her for accidentally staining her already stained couch. "The only plausible explanation I had for how cold and selfish he had become after a year of happiness was the steroid," the woman thought.

Exiting the relationship abruptly

Despite recognizing the red flags, the woman was about to sign a joint lease for a new apartment and was discussing marriage with him. But that was until he ended things with her over a phone call. When she asked him whether he had found someone else, he hesitated at first, but then he exploded at her, saying "he didn’t have the bandwidth for that right now." His rant continued as he called her out for using the dishwasher and not going to the gym more often, even though he knew she worked three jobs at the time.

The red light revelation

The truth behind his strange behavior only came to light when she spotted her while waiting at the red light right before his apartment two months after their breakup. "He walked for a bit with her and then went into his apartment with a girl, and they looked like they were walking from the gym he went to," she recalled. His long gym hours and deactivated Instagram account exposed his calculated transition, or as she labeled it, "monkey branching." He had already made up his mind and wanted her gone, but only after he found another woman. Although she didn't know how this idea occurred to him, she assumed he got it from a friend who did something similar to his girlfriend.

It counts as cheating

Even though what this woman's partner did to her doesn't necessarily amount to cheating, the majority of people would agree with it being termed as that. That is because 76% of Americans feel that having an emotional relationship with someone else while being with your partner is cheating, according to an Institute of Family Studies survey. Additionally, the study revealed that 72% of people believe that a similar online relationship with another person would also be counted as infidelity. This shows how people view such incidents.

'He sounds unbearable'

The people were relieved that the woman was able to get out of this relationship before investing even further into it. u/CriticalSwimmer7738 noted, "Girl, the poopy diaper walk took me out, but seriously, you dodged a massive bullet. The fact that he blamed you for everything instead of just being honest says it all. Good riddance, and enjoy that salmon." Meanwhile, u/C0V1Dsucks wrote, "Good riddance is right. He sounds unbearable. Let the new girl deal with his roid rage until she gets sick of him and cheats."
