I (29F) can’t stop thinking about something my boyfriend (35M) said about childbirth and it’s ruining our relationship.

The couple was asking each other hypothetical questions when the author asked what his choice would be in case she had a complicated delivery. With no hesitation, he said he would save the baby. Even though it was just a hypothetical question, his answer stung. When she asked him what the reason behind his answer was, he said, "blood over anything else." The author tried to wrap her head around his answer, but was visibly upset.
She wrote, "What bothered me most was how quickly he answered, as if it wasn’t even a difficult decision." When she told him she was upset, he laughed and brushed it off since it was not a real situation.

What started as a fun game turned serious. The author felt like her boyfriend's answer revealed his true self. His four-word answer, "blood over anything else," made her look at him in a different light. She explained, "I’m upset because I feel like it revealed something about how he sees relationships and where I fit into his priorities." It made her think that maybe they had had different sets of values all this time. She believed a life partner would be someone who is "your person. The person you build a life with, stand by through everything, and grow old with." She was unsure if she over-analyzed the situation or if there were truly cracks in their relationship.

A 2025 Gallup poll found that "family" is one of the most important values for Americans (49%). Another YouGov survey revealed what Americans believed were the keys to a successful relationship. While trust (94%), honesty (92%), and respect (91%) were at the top three, having shared values (68%) was also a huge factor in making relationships work. Because of his answer and lack of hesitation, the author was truly confused about where she stands, and it was taking a toll on their relationship.

The author's post started a debate in the comment section. People were of the view that his answer revealed that he would choose his family and 'blood' over her time and again in the future. u/vibrantmelody commented, "That would be a dealbreaker for me. Valuing a hypothetical baby over me is outrageous." u/DrewXGemini simply said, "I’m saving my Wife. That’s how I feel."
