In a now-deleted post, an individual (u/odd-ground-9724) explained how they had been paying for their cousin at almost every family dinner. Since 2024, the author's family has had a tradition of going out for dinner on the last Friday of every month. The author mostly paid for the meals with their card. However, everyone paid them back except their cousin Rachel. In fact, she owed the author $147. Surprisingly, even after repeated requests, Rachel refused to repay the author. So frustrated, they decided to teach her a lesson. The post, shared on September 9, 2026, had received 2,400 upvotes on Reddit.
Rachel gets the check
The arrangement between the author and their family members worked for two years until recently. They explained, "My cousin Rachel has paid me for 1 of the last 5. It comes to $147 across 4 dinners. I asked twice, both times over text, and both times I got back, 'I'll send it this week.'" But the money never arrived. The author felt like a ''debt collector,'' having to ask their own family for their money, so they stopped. However, they hatched a new plan to get their money back.
During their monthly dinner in August, instead of using their name for the reservation like usual, they used Rachel's name and number. Interestingly, the author didn't inform their cousin about this arrangement. As usual, the family met for dinner. After spending quality time together, bonding over food, it was finally time to pay and leave. The check arrived, and the server placed it in front of Rachel. She had to "explain to the whole table why she was sliding it back down to me," the author said. In the end, Rachel covered the bill, and two days later, returned $147 to the author.
Payback takes time
Waiting for someone to pay back money they owe can be frustrating. A 2021 LendingTree survey revealed that 31% of Americans say a loved one owed them money. Similarly, 49% said a friend owed them money, and 26% gave money to a sibling and were still waiting for it to come back. The report also found that almost half (46%) of people who gave their loved one money regretted it. To no one's surprise, 60% said they haven't received their money. The author was one of the lucky ones. Even though they had to wait for a while, Rachel eventually paid them back.
