We often judge people from the moment they walk into the room. Sometimes, it's who they are, their profession, their confidence, their conversations, or even their looks. We’ve long heard “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but unfortunately, a majority of society is still bent on making ridiculous conclusions from a person’s appearance. A woman who goes by @losangeles4everybody revealed that customers at a coffee shop, Maru Coffee, seemed to treat her poorly based on her looks. Her story, posted on November 30, ended with an unexpected surprise.

The woman took some time off from her schedule to quickly grab a coffee from the local shop. “I forgot you’re supposed to look expensive when you’re in Beverly Hills, but I chose not to believe it,” she remarked. Dressed casually in a t-shirt, sweats, a high pony, and no makeup, the woman made her way to grab her coffee. When she arrived, she was met with rude classism from a stranger who seemed to be “dripping” in money. She clearly gave off the vibe that she was rich, but her words proved that financial wealth was the only type of wealth she had. “She said to me, What the f*** are you looking at, b****? Go back to where you came from,” the woman recalled. She then made a comment about her toes, which caused the line of customers to look directly at her feet, at which point the woman clarified that she hadn't found the time to get a pedicure recently. Despite “feeling numb,” she decided to wait in line and get her coffee. The woman went through a rollercoaster of emotions, dreading every second as she waited in line. She mentioned how Beverly Hills can be a really “ugly place” for people who “aren’t rich or don’t look rich.”

The woman had just stepped out to run errands and decided to grab a coffee, with no idea that it would ruin her day, maybe even her week. However, that’s when a gentleman stepped in to interrupt her spiral. He got into a polite conversation, asking her where she lived, at which point she revealed that she only lived about 9 minutes away from the cafe. That’s when it likely hit him that it wasn’t so much her financial status but rather the people’s entitled way of thinking. The man then confessed that he was born and raised in the area and shared an indirect apology. “He shook my hand and said you’re not supposed to treat people that way.” The stranger even offered to buy her coffee, but she declined. Being insistent, he shared that the cafe’s “Macchiato over ice and cream top” was a good pick and included that for her in his order.

Seeing his compassionate response to a total stranger, the woman was touched. “Bigger moral of the story — LA is for everybody. One bad apple doesn’t determine things,” she remarked. People commended the gentleman for his kindness. A survey shared by Allure revealed that 64% of people said their appearance had helped them get assistance from a stranger, while 62 % noted that they received better service. In a comment, the kind gentleman, identified as Mehrdad Sefvati, wrote, “Great meeting you, and I hope you liked the coffee!” The woman thanked him again in another comment, saying, “You could have just continued but taking a moment to do what you did completely turned things around.” @ashton_agraaa said, “I’m glad that guy stepped in and made it his business to extend kindness!” @ginooo added, “Wish I was there to come to your aid. So tired of that attitude.”
