For those who thought prepping a Thanksgiving meal for the entire family was going to be expensive, this woman is sharing exactly how to do it affordably.
Thanksgiving season means family and friends gathering for feast and festivities. However, arranging various dishes for a Thanksgiving dinner requires people to spend a lot of money to purchase groceries and ingredients. The average-income households and those who struggle to make ends meet have to rake their brain to figure out cheaper meals they can cook on a budget. If you are also in the process of figuring out a festive dinner under a budget, then meet Rebecca Chobat–who goes by @dollartreedinners on TikTok. Chobat has been sharing videos of simple and affordable recipes for a long time.
In one of the videos that gained nearly 11 million views, Chobat shared how a Thanksgiving dinner can be put together on a $20 budget. This guarantees to help people facing various issues, such as food insecurity or simply trying to reduce their grocery bills. Chobat showed her viewers how she spent $20 to buy ingredients from Dollar Tree and still arranged multiple dishes for the festive dinner. "I've got a $20 budget to make a Thanksgiving dinner using ingredients from Dollar Tree, and I'm happy to say that not only have I already made Dollar Tree Thanksgiving dinner, I do think it was the best Thanksgiving dinner that I ever made," Chobat proudly stated in her video.
Then Chobat took her viewers with her as she shopped for the ingredients at the store. "Dollar Tree has a good amount of Thanksgiving-related food items in stock this year, including canned Turkey. Each item is $1.25. So here's what my $20 got me this year," Chobat continued as she browsed through the shelves. First, she picked up a can of chicken broth, a bottle of ranch dressing and some Italian seasoned bread crumbs. "Next, I got a box of Mac and cheese, a box of Turkey stuffing mix and I got these original mashed potatoes. I'm getting milk and margarine to make these. Then, I got a packet of roasted Turkey gravy mix. A package of dried cranberry since they didn't have cranberry jelly," Chobar mentioned.
Additionally, she purchased a pack of French-styled green beans, two cans of Turkey, a packet of sugar cookie mix, some chewy caramels, channel apple pie fillings, cheddar cheese and even a baking tray. "This would still put you under $25, but it would make this meal just a little bit better," Chobat added, sharing the menu for her Thanksgiving dinner. "For an appetizer, we're doing some fried Mac and cheese bites. For our main dish, I am doing a casserole. That is all of the best parts of Thanksgiving layered together. And then lastly, for dessert, I made some caramel apple pie, sugar cookie bars."
The comment section was thrilled to find Chobat's hack for the grocery shopping haul and applauded her for cooking up an entire feast for under 20 to 25 dollars. @theunderone shared, "Hi! I'm a cashier at Dollar Tree. I saw three people today buying ingredients from this exact video. All three people had at least one kid with them. You're making families smile from Colorado." @emma.jane commented, "It's just me and my son. I'm about to have surgery, so finances are incredibly tight. Thank you so much for this." @apresto0 added, "As a dietician, the service you're providing is invaluable. Food, especially holiday meals, sustains us emotionally. Thank you for making these recipes approachable to folks of many abilities and needs."
