Pranks can be a great way to bring laughter and create lasting memories, but there’s a fine line between playful and hurtful. What starts as harmless fun can sometimes dredge up painful emotions or unintentionally cause harm. That’s exactly what happened to Reddit user u/groundbreakingtie602, who shared how a “prank” by her fiancé left her devastated and in tears, grappling with emotions she didn’t see coming.

The woman was enjoying a festive drive-through Christmas lights when her fiancé casually mentioned that he had a surprise for her. Knowing he was not great with surprises, she was excited and curious. "We were out looking at Christmas lights tonight when my fiancé said he had a surprise for me. He usually isn't great with surprises, so I was intrigued," she wrote. The couple stopped near a beautiful house and the man turned to his fiance and asked, "What do you think of this house?"

She shared that she had been hoping to move out of her small one-bedroom apartment for a while. "I told him it was very pretty. He said, 'What do you see in the yard?' And I told him I saw a for sale sign, and then he told me to look again and pulled back. The sign said 'under contract,'" read the Reddit post. The woman quickly began connecting the dots, her excitement building with each passing second. Her fiancé waited patiently as her enthusiasm bubbled over. Once she managed to compose herself, she asked her partner, "Is this our house?"

Her excitement turned to heartbreak when her fiancé burst into laughter and said, "Nope." As the couple drove away from the spot, her heart shattered with each passing minute. She could no longer control her emotions as she broke down crying. "That was one of the cruelest things I think I've ever had anyone done to me by someone I love and trust," she revealed. Feeling unsure, the woman turned to Reddit, asking people if she overreacted to what was supposed to be a harmless joke

The post ignited a lively discussion, with many siding with her reaction. u/patt_myaz commented, "That wasn't a prank. That was the most cold-hearted, cruel thing I've heard in a long, long time. I dated an abusive a*****e for four years, and he never 'pranked me' like this. This is not okay. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this shit. Please rethink your engagement. You can't spend your life like this." u/sable__fox wrote, "Is this for real? Who even does that? In this economy, playing with someone's hopes like that is next-level cruel. To be honest, I'd rethink the whole engagement too, hit him with the 'I was joking when I said yes' line and watch him squirm. Karma's a thing."

Similarly, u/adcandid4609 added, "I had a boyfriend do this to me, except with a proposal and a fake ring. That made me feel bad and cry. When I asked if he was serious because the ring was so glaringly humongous fake. Then, he pretended to take back the fake proposal because I asked if he was serious. Also, I did not marry him."
