She bought lettuce in March, showing how it was still fresh and crunchy in May.
Most people dread buying lettuce in bulk because it never seems to last; within a week or two, it’s limp, browning, and destined for the trash. But one TikTok creator has turned that assumption upside down, showing how she kept her Costco lettuce fresh for nearly two months. The trick, she says, is simple, cheap, and saves her money on groceries every week. The Canadian woman, who posts money-saving tips on her TikTok account Personal Finance SlayQueen (@budget.audit.save), shared a video responding to a follower asking how to keep lettuce from spoiling. The video has since gained over 244k views and 22k likes.
By then, the lettuce had already been sitting in her fridge for two months. "I bought this lettuce at the end of March. To prove it to you, the best-before date is April 25th," she said. She then revealed her hack, adding, "I just keep it in the plastic bag but I put a little towel or paper towel, damp, just on the end." Holding up a head of romaine lettuce, she peeled back a few of the outer leaves to reveal the crisp green underneath. "That is a perfect head of lettuce after two months," she declared.

Her tip seemed like a game-changer, considering grocery prices have steadily risen over the past five years, with produce often among the most wasted items in households. In a multi‑country survey of primary grocery shoppers in the US, Canada, the UK, and France, researchers found that fresh fruit and vegetables are highly perishable and more likely to become inedible and dumped. Notably, the most frequently cited reason that consumers threw out produce, across all four countries, was that it spoiled more quickly than expected, with about 59 % to 65 % of respondents pointing to that issue. Lettuce, in particular, tends to spoil quickly, and when it does, it goes straight into the trash. Extending its life by weeks means fewer dollars lost and a lot less food wasted.
The post resonated strongly with viewers, many of whom were eager to try the trick for themselves. @ottowooods commented, "Wow. I might actually be able to buy lettuce for the first time in my life! I’d NEVER use it in the like two weeks you’d get from it if you just threw it in the fridge." @vindicatedt concluded, "This works, guys! I’ve been doing this for a while, and I’m always super impressed with how fresh my lettuce stays even after 1 month since my purchase."
Some also chimed in with their own methods to keep produce fresh longer. @onyxxii added, "You honestly don't even have to sacrifice the first layer, if it's only a little limp and not turning orange yet, give it an ice bath and he’ll come alive and become crispy again!!! (This works with any leafy greens)." @queen_of_the_dillholes shared, "Do the same with green onions! I wrap once with a damp paper towel and then with a dry one… crispy and good until you run out!" @candi_reacts wrote, "I do that too! Or I put some water in a Tupperware container, put my lettuce in there, carrots, celery, and bok choy. All the things! It works and saves a lot of money and waste.
