Years of getting bullied in school crushed her self-esteem, but then, one lunch lady’s meaningful words changed everything.
Sometimes, children can knowingly or unknowingly be extremely mean to their peers at school without realizing the consequences of their rude actions. Many people who go through bullying early in their lives develop low self-esteem while growing up. A woman faced this for years until an act of kindness not only restored her faith in humanity but also boosted her confidence. The business owner from Arkansas, Lexi Dowdy—who goes by @moon_beams__ on TikTok—opened up about how a kind lunch lady provided her with the most important thing in her life: the spirit to fight back. In an emotional video, the 29-year-old shed light on how kids suffer from serious body image issues when no one around them appreciates how they look.
Being a baker herself, Lexi suggested that what someone does for a living should never get in the way of creating a meaningful impact on other people’s lives. Now, the woman claimed she wanted to show the same kindness that a school server once extended to her. “No matter what job you're doing—whether you're a gas station clerk like me, a cafeteria lady like you, a cashier, or a barista—you can impact people's lives. Whatever you do, you have the power to make a great impression that they will remember for the rest of their lives,” she remarked before sharing a heartwarming incident from her formative years.
Lexi was bullied what she described as “relentlessly” in high school. “I grew up fat, so of course, I was bullied. I had such low self-esteem and felt like the ugliest person alive. I hated myself,” the woman recalled. Due to constant hounding and insults from her peers at school, she was not able to see “anything beautiful” about herself. During one such rough school day, she met a lunch lady and somehow felt an instant connection with her. Remembering the first time the server in her 40s made her feel special, Lexi shared receiving a compliment from her. Notably, it was a rare sight for her, as she was consistently mocked or ridiculed for her appearance.
“I was getting in line to have my wrap made when she looked at me and exclaimed loudly, ‘Oh my God, you have the most beautiful skin! Are you Scandinavian? You look like you have beautiful Scandinavian skin—it's just absolutely stunning,’” Lexi elaborated. She further emphasized how that one positive comment changed her perspective on herself, making her feel like a confident teenager. “That was the first time I ever remember feeling beautiful or ever remember looking at myself later in the mirror and being like, wow, do I have beautiful skin?” the business owner added.
“Just the thought that I had at least one feature that someone perceived as beautiful was life-changing for me. I'm not trying to be dramatic, but it genuinely started to change how I viewed myself,” Lexi continued. The now-professional baker and owner of Moonbeams Bakery stated that she’d remember the kind lunch lady for the rest of her life. Her inspiring message to stand up for those in need managed to draw widespread attention on social media. Among the countless reactions it received, @callmekellz2 agreed, “I've been the fat girl my whole life. Yes, there's always that one lady at lunch.” “I worked in the dietary department at a hospital for four years, and I loved it! I cooked, worked the tray line, pushed carts to patient floors, and passed out their meals,” @caligirl382 echoed similar sentiments.
