Photographers often help people see themselves in ways they haven’t before, sometimes bringing out emotions they didn’t expect. On April 28, 2026, in an Instagram reel that has been viewed one million times, street photographer Alan (@alanhao_photos) captured an encounter with a woman who added a little inspiring light to his day while he did the same to hers. Alan met the woman in Nepal, and his one question to her turned into a deeply emotional moment.

A chance encounter

At first, the woman, who introduced herself as Rosie, was reluctant to get her portrait done. “I don’t want to have the photo. There will be no smile in my eyes again,” she told Alan. To cheer her up, Alan told her that he saw a light in her eyes when she was looking at the kids. When she laughed, he asked her whether it was okay for him to take a portrait of her. “But I have got so many wrinkles,” Rosie said, still hesitant about getting photographed. Alan resolved her inner dilemmas by saying, “I think it’s beautiful. It makes you who you are.”

To set the stage, he started asking her some questions, not expecting that Rosie was carrying a bundle of grief behind her smile. When he asked her whether there was a reason why she was visiting the place, which looked like a temple, she answered that it helps her to accept the loss of her husband, who died two years ago. He tried to cheer her up by saying that she reminded him of his grandma. “Just get comfortable. Imagine you are waiting for someone here,” he said to her. She responded with a heart-wrenching reply, “I am waiting for my husband to come.”

The invisible beauty of grief

Rosie told Alan that sadness comes in waves. Alan reflected that sadness is part of normal human emotion and asked whether she had any suggestions for people going through a struggle. “Look for the light in yourself,” Rosie answered. After the portrait was done, she walked away. A few moments later, Alan reached out to her and gave her a postcard with a photograph of her he had printed out. "I know you want to be alone right now, but you probably need this at this moment. It's the least I can do," he told her. After looking at it, she told Alan, “It was a very special experience meeting you.”

The magic of photography

The wholesome encounter reaffirms what researchers who studied photography wrote in The American Journal of Social Science and Education Innovations. In the December 2024 study, researchers investigated how professional photography sessions affect women’s self-image and self-esteem. The results found that photography sessions had positive effects on women’s self-esteem and also helped them overcome negative perceptions about their bodies.

Additionally, a poll conducted by Studio Newport also echoed that photography sessions, boudoir photography in particular, have healing effects on a woman’s body image. After these sessions, 88% of women reported higher self-esteem and improved relationships. 85% reported improved body image, and 88% reported feeling empowered after the sessions.

Bittersweet and heart-wrenching

In the comments section, viewers contemplated the sentiment of grief and how it carries its own beauty, exactly what Alan tried to make Rosie see within herself. @nastygalcoco said, "'I’m waiting for my husband to come.' As someone who has lost someone dear to them, this hit my heart." @marayna remarked, “The light on her with you went to give her the photo, and without her glasses was also so beautiful. Really highlighted the beauty and life lived in her eyes.”
