Woman thought she'd met the man of her dreams — until a cat toy in his Instagram post set off every alarm bell in her head

Finding out the person you thought you knew had been lying the entire time can be devastating. Charli Moore (@charli.j.m_) went through something similar and detailed how she thought she had found the one, only to be proven wrong by a cat toy months later. She thought the man who helped her grieve her dad's death was someone she could build a future with, but she was clearly wrong. She posted a "storytime" video on her TikTok on May 22, which has reached 50,500 views, 1,674 likes, and 57 comments. 

Mutually exclusive

For some context, Moore and the guy, whom she did not name, began talking in January. They went on their first date in mid-February, but her dad passed away two days later. Their connection deepened after he was there for her, waiting inside the car, outside the hospital. In just a few months, their relationship had gotten serious. Even though they never put a label on it, they mutually understood they were exclusive. However, three weeks before she shared the video, they decided to just be friends. That changed on May 19, after they hung out at the movies. Although she never explicitly mentioned it, they resumed their romantic connection.

Snapchat clues

The next day, the man went to watch a basketball game with his friends, but he had been sending her videos the entire time. Around 10:00 p.m., the messages abruptly stopped. When Moore finally heard from him the following day, she immediately asked where he had been. He mentioned a friend's name, prompting Moore and a coworker to do some digging. As luck would have it, the coworker had a friend on Snapchat, so they checked his stories.

There were videos of the guys watching the game, and as the camera panned to other people, Moore spotted her man getting cozy with a girl she recognized. She called him during her break to confront him, but Moore could tell he was lying. He hung up, saying he and his friend needed to get breakfast. That was when it got messy. Moore and her colleague checked the friend's Snapchat story and location, and found out he had been home since 2:00 a.m. Moore's boyfriend had been lying all this time.

Cat toy gave it away

Connecting the dots, she remembered seeing him at the same location a couple of times ever since they began talking. She saw him there two days after her dad passed away. Recalling what she saw in the videos, she remembered seeing a cat toy in the videos he had sent her. Going full FBI mode, she began digging for clues. It turns out, his friend had a dog, but the girl, whom Moore recognized, had a cat.

Comparing the photos on the girl's Instagram to the videos he had sent Moore, she confirmed he was at the girl's apartment. "He's gone to this apartment before, even all the way back in February, when we just started talking and when my dad passed," she said. Instead of letting it go quietly, she drove up to the girl's apartment, confronted him, and broke it off.

What is considered cheating?

People have different definitions of cheating. A 2022 YouGov poll found that 93% agree that sleeping with someone else while in a committed relationship is considered cheating, 83% believe sending suggestive messages is also cheating, 80% are of the view that lying about spending time with another person is also cheating. Moore's boyfriend had lied to her for months, saying he was at his friend's house, but was actually spending time with another girl. In Moore's eyes, he was cheating.
