Back then, this 14-year-old girl wished that everyone in this universe lives happily ever after, including the mosquitoes.
Flipping through old journals feels like traveling back in time—revisiting waves of emotions, bursts of laughter, and cherished memories. A Reddit user in her early 20s, u/Amazing_Ad_4007, recently unearthed a teenage time capsule while sorting through the attic of her childhood home. She shared a screenshot of a page from a notebook she kept at 14, where a green-marked heading read, Make a Wish. The list that followed struck a nostalgic chord with many, earning over 7,000 upvotes in under 24 hours. Some users even likened her wishes to a scene straight out of "Mean Girls."
The woman described that she left her old room and moved overseas decades ago. So when she returned to the bygone house and shuffled through her childhood stuff, she came across this notebook. “Rereading what I’ve written as a 14-year-old who’s still relatively naive about life,” she wrote in the post. In the screenshot below, she displayed an open cream-colored leaf of a ruled notebook. Beneath the heading, she had jotted down a rule in blue pen, “Rule: Start with ‘I wish.’”
Below the rule, the teenager had scribbled a list of wishes, each starting with “I wish.” The content of these entries ranged from the emotions of her girlie self to the conundrums of teenage years as well as sublime thoughts about changing the world. The first entry read, “I wish I’ll get my period (hopefully not in public),” followed by the second one, “I wish I’ll grow b**bs.”
The teenage girl had also mentioned her wishes regarding friendships. “I wish friendships aren’t so complicated,” read one entry, whereas, another one said, “I wish I will still make lots of friends when I migrate to Australia. I wish I’ll never have to break up with my classmates and friends.” Other wishes she jotted down in her list included “world peace,” “no racism” and “no global warming.”
“I wish there’s no such thing as hobos, beggars, orphanage child or old folks home,” one entry said. The next one was a positive one for everyone: “I wish everyone in this universe (yes, even you, flies and mosquitoes) lives happily, ever, after.” Another piece was about a dire conflict that she faced during her teenage years — regarding television. “I wish I can watch my favorite TV show in peace without being disturbed and insulted.” But despite this wish, she didn’t forget her love for her parents and added another wish — that her “parents never get old.”
The woman confessed how, after reading her old diary, she wished she was an "innocent tween again stressing about getting my period and making new friends.” Someone asked how things turned out for her in all these years. She replied, “No world peace and all of the global things, still no b**bs but really grateful for it, period came but not grateful for it and got over my annoyance towards mosquitoes.” In another comment, she revealed that she’s getting happier as she grows older. “I think my happiness marginally increased as I got older and started to appreciate a lot of things I wouldn’t notice as a child.”
The post instantly became viral on Reddit, attracting comments from hundreds of people. “Your parents should be proud of you; that's a 14-year-old kid I dream to raise,” said u/maximum-ad-769. Similarly, u/iammostlylurking13 expressed, “I think I was the only girl who thought getting my first period was worse than dying. I constantly wished it would never come.” u/imaginary_dot_8953 quipped, “I too wanted b**bs more than world peace, and now we have….neither. Simple times!” u/pakman-56 declared, “This is the most 2000s coming of age movie thing I have ever seen!”
