What seemed like a lost cause turned into a beautiful connection due to one common link.
When you've been heartbroken too many times, the idea of opening up to someone new can feel overwhelming. The search for a true partner can often seem like an endless cycle of frustration. Yet, for one woman, who goes by u/The_Unsealed on Reddit, what seemed like a lost cause turned into a beautiful connection when she met a man at 36, someone she believes was brought into her life by none other than her late grandfather.
In her post, she admitted that she had "lost hope that I would find my person — a true partner." A few weeks before her birthday, at a Miami Tech gathering, she met a man who seemed different, but she was cautious. "We started hanging out a lot, but at this point, I had been disappointed so many times, my guard was up — all the way up. I was questioning everything," she recalled. She further shared that 'rain' had always served as a source of comfort for her — a link to her late grandfather. "My grandfather died when I was 14. I loved him. He was funny and loving, and we shared a talent for sports," she explained.
She further said that before her grandfather died, he told her that "rain was good luck," and that held true for her. Over the years, rain seemed to show up at key moments in her life. "It rained on my high school graduation. I always seemed to score in soccer when we played in the rain. The day I interviewed for my dream job as a sportscaster, it rained. The day I was offered that job, it also rained AND it was my grandfather's birthday," she noted. Months into her relationship with her fiancé, she found herself intrigued by the meaning of his name. "He was busy at the moment and mumbled, 'something with water,'" she shared. After some curiosity, she decided to look it up, and the discovery was startling. "His name means 'God of Rain,'" she revealed.
As their wedding plans took shape, another coincidence seemed to echo her belief in fate. She had only had two available dates left for the summer. "I wanted to get married sooner rather than later. The next available date is the weekend of my grandfather's birthday," she said, concluding, "I always thought rain was how my grandfather kept us connected, turns out it's also what allowed me to feel safe connecting with someone else." This belief in fate is something a lot of cultures foster. As per a study, in Chinese culture, the concept of "yuanfen" refers to the idea that relationships are predestined by fate, which can nurture them, promoting harmony and reducing the likelihood of conflict.
Her story resonated with a lot of users, and they expressed how they would hope for rain on her wedding day. u/SLyndon4 wrote, "This may be the first time I actually hope it rains on someone’s wedding day! Not much, just a brief shower to remind you of your grandfather and maybe bring out a rainbow for your wedding photos." u/deleonking11 commented, "As someone who loved and looked up to my grandfather so much, this story made me cry. I completely love your story and best wishes to the both of you! Congratulations to you both!" u/pmolikujyh noted, "It’s a saying in French 'mariage pluvieux, mariage heureux,' which translates to 'rainy wedding, happy wedding.'"
