Genuine bonds grow through mutual love, trust, and respect. However, unfortunately, close bonds also open doors to exploitation. A mom from Ohia experienced exactly that when her adult son moved in with her. Well, we are talking about Margaret Saadi, who has reportedly suffered a major financial loss after her son Phillip made unauthorized withdrawals from her bank account. He not only used his mother's money in illegal activities but also spent a significant amount on buying lottery tickets. When Margaret realized it, she immediately filed a lawsuit against the Ohio Lottery Commission to stop her son from collecting lottery winnings, as per the WFMJ report on June 24, 2026.

The ultimate betrayal

It all began when Philip moved from New Mexico to live with his mom in Trumbull County. Everything was going well until Margaret noticed strange transactions in her bank account. As it turned out, Philip made several unauthorized withdrawals from her account, stealing $6,560 between May 4 and June 5. As per the lawsuit, he used the money on drugs and lottery tickets, one of which earned him a “big payout.” While it's still unknown how much Philip made out of the winning lottery, his mom has demanded $10,000 in compensation.

Elder abuse by adult kids

As sad and traumatic as it may sound, adult children are the most frequently identified perpetrators of elder financial abuse. According to the IC3’s 2023 Elder Fraud Report, elder fraud complaints to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center increased by 14% in 2023, and associated losses increased by about 11%. Similarly, a report by the certified public accountants Myers and Stauffer stated that children who engage in parental financial abuse are likely to live close to their parents in the same house while victimizing their parents. Moreover, 20% of the elder financial abuse cases involve theft of financial assets, funds, or income by a trusted person. In 40% of the cases, this trusted person is their own adult child.

Mom fights back

Meanwhile, Margaret's case remains open, but she has appealed to the Ohio Lottery Commission to freeze Phillip’s funds. Moreover, she said she should get the jackpot money because Phillip had bought it using her money. Margaret explained that she suspects that if Phillip succeeds in snagging the money, he will flee to New Mexico to escape the investigation, which will make it more difficult for her to recover the funds.
