Ben started playing a voice recording, and Mia broke down hearing a familiar voice

On March 10, Mia Matthews (@miamakana), a singer-songwriter, shared a wholesome video with her friends and followers on Instagram. She was sitting in the living room, surrounded by friends and family, along with her fiancé Benjamin Dale (@thebenjamindale). Mia and Ben had been together since 2022, and he recently popped the question in March. But Ben still had one more surprise he knew would make Mia happy.
He had recorded a conversation between him and her late grandfather two years ago. When the voice note started playing, Ben could be heard responding to a question the old man had asked — perhaps about the proposal. "Not anytime soon," Ben said, "but I was gonna ask if I could have your permission to ask her to be my wife one day." Mia gasped as she was taken aback when she heard her grandpa's familiar voice responding.
Ben was sitting on another couch, looking at Mia's reaction. The moment the room heard her grandfather's (Paw Paw) voice, all eyes went to Mia. Still in shock from hearing her late grandfather's voice, she covered her face with her hands and started crying happy tears.
Paw Paw responded to Ben's question by giving him his blessings, saying, "You better believe it. Anything I can give to you, and I mean it." All this time, Ben never took his gaze off his fiancée's reaction. He was smiling and looking at her, full of love in his eyes.
Ben wanted Mia to know that she was loved by her grandfather, and he wanted to cherish the memory, so he asked, "Will you just tell me that you love her, that you're proud of her?" For a few seconds, Paw Paw misunderstood what Ben wanted him to say, causing Mia to burst into laughter. He began praising his granddaughter, calling her "the sweetest girl that I have ever known, and the best."
He expressed how much he believed in her, saying, "Whatever she's doing, it's better than the people around her... I stand by that." After the voice note ended, everyone clapped and cheered for the couple as Mia embraced Ben, still crying happy tears.
Many may think that asking for permission to propose to a partner may be old school, but the majority of Americans still follow the tradition. The Knot conducted a Jewelry and Engagement Study on over 7,800 couples across the U.S. in 2024, and the findings are quite surprising. According to the study, 68% of the people had asked for parental permission.
A few other proposal traditions that the study noticed were proposing with a ring. Out of the 7,800 couples, 89% of the people were proposed to with a ring in hand. 85% of the couples got down on one knee while proposing, and 87% of people actually asked the question, "Will you marry me?"

Mia's video, in which Ben surprised her with her grandfather's approval, has reached 637K likes, and more than 1.6K people have commented on it. @meggyroo87 noted two things in the video: "One, hearing your grandpa’s voice and approval. Two, knowing this man has loved you and knew he was going to marry you two whole years ago."
@lel.mg did not miss the part where Ben was looking at his soon-to-be wife. They commented, "Why is no one talking about how intently and lovingly he’s watching her reaction?" @lutonello said, "This is what we call 'to be loved out loud.' I love this so much."
