The tipping culture has gone crazy in recent days as people are expected to tip for even the bare minimum of work. While service providers charge a hefty amount for their service, they also expect customers to add a tip simply for the sake of gratitude. But gratitude should be voluntary, as argued by many on the internet who are against this tipping culture. Justice (@antidietpilot), an anti-diet culture enthusiast from Chicago, was also someone who had recently started acting against the expectations to tip. Her TikTok video about how tipping was unnecessary gained the approval of thousands online.

During her recent braiding session, she just paid the full cost of the service without adding any tip. She revealed that since she usually left a tip whenever she got her hair done, not tipping gave her a huge anxiety. "I just did not feel like tipping was necessary on the service," said Justice and went on to explain why by breaking down the cost. The total cost of braiding her hair in small, knotless French curl braids came out to $350. Considering the time taken to complete the braids, Justice said that the hairdresser took 7.5 hours to finish the job which meant that each hour cost around $46. Excluding the cost of hair extensions used, the hairdresser had charged $40 an hour for her service.

"She didn't have to commute. She's not paying any extra overhead because she's working from home," Justice pointed out. She felt that $40/hour was a "really good price" compared to many employees who make lesser hourly wages. Also, since the hairdresser only accepted cash payment, the content creator had to go to the ATM calling it the "most inconvenient method of payment." Additionally, Justice had to be the one commuting back to the hairdresser's place for the follow-up appointment to wash, condition and blow-dry her hair. She didn't want to complain about the braiding experience because she received the best service from the hairdresser whom she would gladly visit again. But she couldn't fathom the purpose of tipping some extra dollars.

To people who insist that tipping is a way of showing gratitude, Justice said, "To me saying 'Thank you,' is respecting people's policies, arriving to appointments on time, being respectful of the space that you're in, letting them take photos of their work after and may be telling your friends or following on social media." She ended her video by saying, "We don't need to bump someone's forty-dollar-an-hour work up to 45 to say 'Thank you.'" So far, the video gained over 5 million views and more than 10K comments.

"I'm so sick of tipping. I ordered a pizza to pick up and the receipt at checkout asked for a tip. For what? I'm picking it up," commented @bridgetgoudelock. "I purposely set my prices for what I need to live and tell everyone tipping is not necessary. The best tip is just to come back and tell your friends," wrote @lucidlexie_the1. "Yeah, I’m with you I’m not tipping for hair or nails anymore. Their price keeps climbing and half the time they are late," commented @iamjessie.b.
