The real marriage flex isn't a rich husband. It's one who fixes the dryer, says woman in viral video

Gerhardt's husband's self-assurance gives her peace of mind whenever something around the house breaks

"Marry the handy guy," says Jillian Gerhardt (@jilliangerhardt), a mother of three and blue-collar wife. The influencer explained why women should choose a man who is good at fixing things over a materially wealthy man. She began her video by saying, "One of the greatest luxuries in life is being married to the handy guy, not yacht or private jet rich. I'm talking about a level of wealth that is way more realistic." The video has reached 2.6 million views, 126,400 likes, and  7,299 comments.

Perks of a handyman husband

Gerhardt shared the joys and the different kinds of "wealth" that come from being married to her blue-collar husband. She's not worried about how much money they will have to spend if something is broken. Instead of wasting thousands of dollars on a repairman or a service, her husband will spend $47 on parts, watch a YouTube video, disappear for three hours, and voila! Whatever was broken will be fixed. She gave an example, "The dryer starts making a weird noise, and your husband goes, 'Let me take a look at it. That is wealth.'"

No need to hire a professional

She emphasized that "handy husbands don't just fix things, they know things. Things that no normal person should know." She went on to explain how her husband understood the "inner workings" of everything around the house. However, the best part was his self-assurance. She revealed how he never went, "Hm, maybe I should hire a professional," because he's the professional. She concluded the video by reiterating to her audience to marry the handy guy, "because one day your house is gonna make a noise, and instead of panic, you'll hear the most comforting words a woman could hear, 'I know what's wrong.'"

Money is not everything, or is it?

Gerhardt expressed how she thinks a "handyman" is more attractive than a wealthy man. However, a recent LendingTree survey cited by Newsweek revealed that 31% of men felt that wealth boosts a person's appeal, and 24% of women thought the same. Researchers compared the numbers by generation. Results showed that Gen Z (44%) thought being rich made the other person more attractive, while only a handful of Baby Boomers (13%) believed the same.

Alyssa Pettinato, a dating expert and host of the MissJudged Podcast, said, "They (Gen Z) are in the scariest phase of life, and polls show they lack the intelligence and hustle to be able to stand on their own, so of course someone offering financial security is more attractive." Additionally, 26% of unmarried adults revealed they would consider marrying someone simply for their wealth.

The men in the comment section were extremely appreciative of Gerhardt's video for noticing their hard work. Several women also shared stories to appreciate what their handy husbands have done for them. @lynettebel47 commented, "Almost got a ticket for my car horn not working. Hubby installed a backup. I'm probably the only one in the universe who drives a car with 2 operating car horn systems." @katherineanneturn added, "I’ve got one of those husbands!! Love him so much! 44 years and going fine!"
